You know what it’s like when you are invited somewhere for dinner, and suddenly remember on the way there that you haven’t got anything to offer them! I hate that feeling, and I always feel really awkward if I don’t give someone a bottle of wine or chocolates for their hospitality. It’s only polite! One such an occasion occurred when I was visiting my boyfriend’s parents in Bothwell, and needed to pick up a nice bottle of red. I nipped into Canapé Wines, which is just next to the Bothwell Bridge Hotel, to see if they had anything that tickled my fancy. They had just about every Vino imaginable, and some that you would never have imagined. My wine vocab usually only streches to ‘House red’ or ‘that sparkling one with the cork in’, so I was a bit bewildered in this cave full of the stuff. It is very old inside, almost dusty, which gives it a wonderful charm. The guy behind the counter looked about the same age as me, early 20’s, and bored as a person could be. No wonder, they didn’t even have the radio on! I left with a bottle, which I was told was nice, and I accepted that as gospel. My hosts seemed to like it, so all was well. Nice wee shop for some good wine, if you know your stuff!

Canapé Wines is based in the historic Bothwell, just on the outskirts of Glasgow. The main street in Bothwell is a great place for a wander, especially on a sunny day, as the town is really pretty. Inside Canapé Wines itself you will find a large selection of fine wines as well as a very extensive whiskey section. You’ll also find champagne, world beers, spirits and a little bit of chocolate(a brilliant addition!). The shop is very well fitted out — and feels wonderfully old-fashioned inside. The owner is very friendly and helpful — and will be happy to advise you on anything you wish to buy. Perhaps Canapé Wines is a little out of the way for most of you, but it’s a really lovely shop with a great selection of wines, beers and spirits. If you have someone special to buy for — or if you’re a bit of a conneiseur yourself — though, I advise you to make the trip!
