My tummy was making the rumblies, that only a baked potato would satisfy. But being in the Merchant City, with it’s fancy bars and restaurants, it’s not easy to find a place that does basic, no-frills nosh, so I went a-wanderin’. Every now and then I remember that High Street exists, with it’s forgotten little grocery shops, curiosity shops and a butcher. That’s right Merchant City, you have a local butcher. Or as close to a butcher as you’re gonna get in the city. But this review is for Elbow’s Café. Completely down to earth, greasy spoon, square suasage in a bun with a can of Irn Bru style café. But more importantly, baked potatos. The menu is standard café stuff, hot rolls, cold rolls, panini’s, fried breakfasts, pies etc. The most expensive snack on the menu was my potato with mexican chicken at £2.95. This came with salad. Not too bad, although if they told me it was chiken tika, I’d have believed them, except that tika was also a choice on the menu. Together with my cup of black coffee the total came to £4.05 Most expensive items on the menu were the main meals. Steak pie, lasagne, chilli con carnage etc. All served with chips, rice, mash, beans or peas and coming in at £4.95, I think we’re still doing good on the price front. Top tip: they don’t accept cards, only cash. Décor-wise, well, it has tables and chairs, and they’re comfortably spaced apart, and there’s a picture on the wall… C’mon, what else do you want? Takeaway is available and, being a lunchtime, what most of the customers chose. Which is fine, I just got on with writing this review. So, no-frills, greasy-spoon café in the Merchant City.
