This is an Indian restaurant I must have walked past close to a thousand times without going in. Why? Because it always seems so quiet. It has big windows looking into the restaurant from the street and I don’t ever remember walking past while it looked busy. However, yesterday my partner and I were craving a curry and, being slightly skint, decided to see if there were any offers available for curry places in the city centre. We narrowed it down to this place, not fully realising which restaurant we’d chosen. On arrival we discovered that the restaurant was, indeed, completely empty. We were placed at a table for two in front of the main window, presumably partly as an advertisement. Not that I mind because I’m nosy and I love people watching, but my partner complained that it was a little cold there. We each ordered a glass of wine(nothing to complain about there). I got the mushroom poori to start while he chose the chicken pakora. I love mushroom poori and this one, I must admit, was pretty darn good. The mushroom filling was spicy and fragrant and the pancake had a lovely texture. I understand the pakora was great too. Both came with a nice, crisp little side salad and lemon wedges. For mains I ordered a chicken balti while he chose a lamb jaipuri. We got a plain naan and a pilau rice to share. Both of us thought we’d ordered the better dish, which I guess is a good sign. Normally when I get curry I have to ask to take some of it home with me but on this occasion we ate every bite. It was actually nice to have slightly less excessive portions — no after-curry regrets. Atmosphere wise the only problem is how quiet the place is. Eventually a second group arrived so it felt slightly less awkward but it is a bit strange to eat in an empty restaurant. The staff are good — they’re attentive without being pushy and they don’t add to the weird atmosphere — but it’s still kind of strange. Perhaps it’s best to stick to visiting this place only on busy Friday and Saturday evenings.

With the festive season been and gone, it brought with it rather a lot of eating out and going to a lot of places I hadn’t been before. I was out with a couple of pals for a day and we were a bit peckish so, we went in for an Indian. We were still on time for pre-theatre, and the staff made this pretty clear. The pre-theatre menu was reasonable and varied. We had poppadoms to begin with and they were exquisite. The spicy onions were great. To start, we shared chicken pakora, vegetable pakora and onion bhajis. The pakoras were excellent and not too spicy. I had a chicken tikka masala as a main course– I know, it was invented in Glasgow! It was smooth and had a kick to it. I thought it was great. Instead of rice, I chose a naan bread and that was also very tasty! The restaurant was quite small, but there was plenty of room. The staff were very friendly, if a bit too friendly. The bill was relatively cheap– just under £45 for three of us including drinks and a side each. I would go back here and try something else and I’d also recommend it!

I’ve eaten at the Indian gallery several several times over the past two years, the restaurant looks clean and tidy the food about average, but for some reason I have not been back in ages. The staff concentrate too much on up selling and trying to get you to order items that you did not want in the first place, with some staff taking the hump due to you not taking their recommendation. The food is good but the staff at the front are the let down. Our server kept on hovering over our table from near start to finish, banging on about trip adviser, I said that I’ve never heard if it. I had paid the bill and thought that it was on the expensive side, we had in fact been over charged & billed for several items that we had not had. The extras where poppadom’s with spicy onions, we where charged for two nann bread when we had one and an extra round of alcoholic drinks when we only had soft drinks. The manager said that we where given the wrong bill, but l could see that the only table that was in with us was a table of one. On leaving there was two people that worked for the restaurant outside handing advertising leaflets that’s why l haven’t come back.

Little pricy, but it’s pretty classy. The food is very tasty. We had 2 appetizers, naan, rice, and 2 main courses. Everything but the dessert. We were very happy with everything.

The Indian Gallery is a new-style Indian restaurant. Out with the chintz, the cushions and the stuffiness: in with the sleek wood floors, the monochrome and the flatscreens. The atmosphere is relaxed and there is a feeling of spacousness inside. All the usual dishes on an Indian restaurant menu are available, and they cater for kids wtih their own menu. I had my chicken tikka chasni, which was delicious as usual. The portion was smaller than is sometimes found, although still too big for me. My main meal came in at around £9 for the dish, which was pretty good. The service was friendly and swift. All in all, a good wee restaurant.
