A handy shop for pre-rail journeys, I tend to pop in and browse the random sweetie offers(great range of sugary treats for when you feel a sweet toothed need). I splashed out on some jumbo Irn Bru multipacks. Like previous Unilocalers say, it’s not the cheapest shop for groceries but it is small enough for surprising treasures every now and then. If you’re of a sausage roll type persuasion, there are a few hot baked items available.

A little bit pricey when compaired to my local store, but they sell cheese and onion square crisps. So am willing to forgive them that. Good range of sweets and chocolate. small(ish) magazine collection and also papers, soft drinks, gum and cigarettes. Has a lotto machine, so can get busy when someone does a big entry

I really don’t like being charged almost £2 for a bottle of Lucozade, but as I absolutely love said bottles of Lucozade, and it’s at least marginally cheper than the heart attack inducing prices in the station, McColls does at least serve some purpose. Apart from that it’s just the usual suspects. Overpriced sweets and crisps, cardboard sarnies, and an annoyingly poor selection of newspapers and magazines. An extra star though, as the other day they had a selection of teatime biscuits on sale at 99p. I know a barg when I see it, and that definitely fitted the bill.

I am writing a review on McColls the newsagents beeeeecause… it sells good hard candy and chewy sweets that you just don’t get anymore. I sound really old, but at 23 I still have a bit to go. I love the bags of sweets though, I am talking fruit flavoured hard sweets with sherbet in them, midget gems, real wine gums. They also have everything your heart desires for your train journey, as McColls is right outside Queen St station, but it isn’t really much cheaper than the station prices.

McColl’s is a reasonably sized corner shop on Dundas Street. Along with a very reasonable selection of magazines(I was pretty impressed with this actually) they also sell all the crisps, nuts and chocolate bars that you could wish for. It’s main raison d’etre, I suppose, is the fact that it’s located just by the Queen Street Station. If you don’t want to pay station prices for a bit of lunch to eat on the train — then I suggest that you stop off here first. As well as the aforementioned crisps and confectionery, McColl’s also do a «meal deal» which unsurprisingly is remarkably similar to the Boot’s incentive of the same name. True, they don’t have a huge selection of sandwiches, but they’ll almost definitely have something that you fancy eating. They also claimed to have a selection of fresh fruits to count towards your 5 a day, at a very attractive 49p each. However, when I popped in there this morning the fruit shelves were completely bare. There wasn’t even a single sad looking satsuma to tempt me with. Ah well, maybe next time!
