I had the fear about this place… The fear that this funky wee independent café was just that little bit too wee and independant to last the course in what’s proved to be a tough spot for businesses. WRONG! I popped in the other day for a cheeky coffee bacon roll and an extra large helping of free WiFi. Coffee is still splendid, bacon roll was just what the doctor ordered and the WiFi was free and plentiful. I like this joint. it’s bright, always immaculately kept and with great service. It’s my go to café in this part of town. Keep it up!

Love that this place is just around the corner! Great for breakfast, brunch and lunch, the food is lovely and fresh and an absolute curer for a hangover. I can highly recommend their square sausage rolls and full breakfast — spot on with a can of bru for an occasional treat. Ignore the fact that you have just consumed all of your daily allowance of calories… Also, lovely strong coffee here for when you need a perk-me-up. The staff are so friendly, free papers available for your perusal — I even like the black and white checked floor in here. They offer other things like sandwiches and paninis that I have yet to try but look great, and they will make what you ask for if it is off-menu. PLUS free wifi! Could easily while away an hour or so in here. Visit!

In a world of vacuum-packed paninis it’s nice to see a brunch/lunch place with a proper kitchen that will freshly prepare you some crispy bacon for your french toast or brie panini. The flip side of the coin is that the service can be slower, a major downfall of the now defunct Coffee @ 291 on Byres Road, but I was lucky enough to catch this place on a quiet afternoon, so the service was pretty acceptable. Nice Italian cappuccinos too, but the quaint tea-shop feel with the girly pink décor may put some customers off.

Mimi’s is a bit of an ironic place. It replaces the vegetarian snob-a-teria, Grassroots Café. The only folks more entitled than the Grassroots Café patrons were the staff. Mimi’s is a celebration of bacon. You can smell the bacon when you enter. I just found it ironic. I want to like this place but I may have visited it at a bad time. It was on several weekends when I was taking courses nearby and we just had problems. Being told that the place was not serving all of the types of rolls on the blackboard. Stuff not being made for take-out. Not big things but there were lots of those. It was a lot of little things. We eventually found other places nearby to lunch at. They may be better during the week. I would hope so.

Mimi’s Kitchen is well deserving of the praise it is receiving over Unilocal, and I am yet another to add an enthusiastic review! It was a typically dismal Tuesday afternoon when I tumbled into this place looking like a drowned rat. I needed some substance before I passed out, and Mimi’s Kitchen certainly delivered! They had a massive selection of fillings for baked poatoes, rolls and panini’s, including healthy and exotic options which always goes down well with me. I visited late on in the day so I am yet to sample their spicy chicken… they had unfortunately sold out. I, however, improvised with the help of the good lady serving me and she rustled me up a dangerously tasty cheese and pepper panini. I devoured it in a bus stop, and despite the Baltic weather conditions it stayed lovely and warm. The woman serving me was also very skilled at getting the toppings to stay in the panini, since none of them spilled out as is usually the case with me. And when you are such a messy eater as I am, it’s a blessing when cheese doesn’t end up in your eyebrows and on your top… and I needn’t go any further with this! It’s a great place for sitting in, with its calming pastel coloured décor with a feminine twist, and its spaciousness would make it good for mums bringing in buggies. But its classic design and central location does not automatically mean the customer receives the usual«West End tax» — for where it is situated, Mimi’s Kitchen is surprisingly cheap! For a tea and a panini I paid three quid, and was so shocked by the low price I thought she hadn’t charged me properly! I was pleased to learn I wasn’t actually dreaming, Mimi’s serve up the cheapest Panini’s in town. And they’re darn tasty, too. When I left the store the friendly staff said«tell all your friends!». I think I will. But for anyone reading this, Mimi’s is awesomely delicious and won’t break your bank balance!

I love any place where I can get breakfast at three o’clock in the afternoon, however Mimi’s is a cut above the rest. With its fifties diner style tiled flooring and candy coloured furnishings, this place is absolutely gorgeous and is the ideal for an afternoon of free wifi and rather late breakfast. I love scrambled eggs on toast and I think the real mark of a place is if they can deliver this well. I was not disappointed. My fluffy and tasty eggs were served on hot buttery brown bread, cut lovingly into triangles like one’s mother would make. Accompanied by a hot, strong cup of coffee and smiley service from the friendly staff, makes this the perfect place for a lazy afternoon in sweet surroundings.
