I’ve popped in and out of here loads of times over the years, but today was the first visit in quite a while. NCP has had quite the makeover recently which looks great but quite dark given that this is a pretty large restaurant. A couple of things survived the refurb — the fish tank as you go in and the awesome huge foo dog(I’m still trying to figure out where in my flat it can live). Lunches are a total bargain here — Starter and main course from the lunch menu for £6.90. The food is always pretty tasty here — today I went for spring rolls and kung po chicken and was not disappointed! The staff are always really friendly and extremely fast– but without making you feel like you’re being rushed. Today we ordered, ate and left within 45mins.

Why so many negative reviews? There has been a cinese eatery here in one form or another for many years And frankly the poor coments dont do the place justice Too many food sobs on Unilocal? Anyway staff are friendly and quite chatty when its quiet I have eaten at many places. Andto say the chef isninspired is st a falsehood The food is of a very good standad always very well presented and importantly TASTY! Recommended Prices for set menus Lunch & pre-theatre ect very reasonable Individual item prices. quite high Ps they do a good pint of tennants too great if your partched on a warm day!

I lived in Scotland for many years and this was the then wife’s favorite Chinese place in Glasgow. I have to admit, I still go back everytime I’m in the city, but more out of nostalgia than true desire to eat there. It’s up a somewhat dark and dodgy-looking staircase in the busiest part of Sauchiehall St. The décor is 70’s tacky Chinese at it’s least attractive, abounding with reds and golds and dragons galore. The staff are efficient, but if you’re looking for friendly, warm, or welcoming, keep looking. The menu isn’t pricy, but it’s uninspired. The food is neither good nor bad. The place definitely could use a damned good renovation and a much more talented chef. That said, the place is always busy and everytime I’ve ever been there, I’ve seen Chinese families eating, so it can’t be all THAT bad. If you happen to be on that end of Sauchiehall St anyway and you want a fast, cheap, acceptable Chinese meal, pop up the stairs to New City Palace, but if you want Chinese that’s impressive, I’d keep moving if I were you.

Décor and experience of the insides appeared pretty standard to me. I got the Red Curry for take away and both times, thought it was quite good. They even let me take a Tiger beer back to my hotel… are you allowed to do that in Glasgow? They take plastic, service was quick, food filled me up, i never got sick… all good.

It’s rare that another review will leave me open mouthed in shock, but Nicola’s revelation that a couple actually held their wedding reception in here is quite disturbing. New City Palace is a passable but fairly grubby Chinese eaterie, with the usual menu and ornamental dragons abound. The 70s décor and general scruffiness of the place make it possibly the least suitable venue for a wedding on the planet. I’d rather face the tanks in Tiananmen Square than have what’s meant to be the most important day of my life reduced to a haze of prawn crackers and crispy shredded beef in a syrupy sauce. I expect all the guests spent the later part of the evening mainly on the toilet, cursing the moment they ordered the king prawn curry, so at least it negated the need to hire a band or a DJ for afterwards.

New City Palace is a less than impressive dining experience. I went in here with a few friends one day when I happened to bump into them when they were shopping in town and I’d just finished work. We decided to grab a bite and after vetoing the usual pizza chains, someone suggested this place. I can’t say I’m a connoisseur of Chinese restaurants. I tend towards the theory that, for all the extra money it costs, the food is never going to be much better quality than a take-away. Well, this place was pretty cheap as we shared a few dishes and split the bill. It was a very weird dining experience, though, as there was a wedding reception meal going on at the same time. If you’ve ever been to this place you’ll know how ridiculous that sounds. It’s not exactly a large place, and they had set up one really long table up against a wall. Sadly the bride had to squeeze past about 8 people to get out to go to the bathroom. It perplexed us that they were still open for business with this going on, and further still that someone would seemingly like this restaurant enough to want to have their wedding meal at it. Oddness aside, I remember having a decent enough meal, and since we split it it wasn’t at all expensive. Overall, however, I think the fact that I’ve never even given the place a second thought speaks volumes.

Tucked away upstairs from the bustling Sauchiehall Street is the New City Palace, quietly doing a roaring trade. Despite the slightly dodgy looking entrance, it’s lovely inside. I have been here many a time for a businessman’s lunch. It’s reliably good and the service is fast. Back before the smoking ban, the left hand side of the restaurant was for smokers and the right hand side for non. Now, it’s obviously all one. At busy lunchtimes there is a queue to get a seat; despite the fact I’d estimate they have room for over 100 people. The fish tank can keep you occupied while you wait though. There is also a small stall selling Chinese gifts: bracelets, fans and wee tea sets. You get ushered in by a sprinting waiter. The businessman’s lunch menu is good. The chicken noodle soup is scalding, with good chunks of meat and a wholesome flavour. The prawn cocktail contains about 6 large prawns with cubed cucumber and tomato on shredded lettuce. The sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style, as well as the chicken and cashew nuts come highly recommended from me. If you can catch a member of the waiting staff whizzing about all around you, then settle your bill: if not, just bring it up to the bar. The toilets are a bit grim, I’d just hold on and go to Buchanan Galleries afterwards if I were you. Strangely, they never take their Christmas decorations down. To be fair, there are millions of them, and I don’t think I could be arsed if I was them. It kind of adds to the charm.
