My visit to Ocho was purely location — it’s right next door to my work. I nipped in looking for a nice fresh sandwich. It’s very difficult to see the actual entrance to the café! I was greeted with a friendly smile! Not really sure what they served I looked around. The sandwich filling looked like they had been out for a week, the tuna had started to go a bit crusty at the side. I opted for a bake potato and a safe option of grated cheese! Can’t really go wrong with that which they didn’t however it was tiny so I picked up a can and a cake to go with — the potato served to me on a paper plate with a plastic bag wrapped round it very chic!!! Now I have just been charged £5.30 for a small baked Potato with cheese a small cake and a can!!! I would expect this in the centre of town but not out side it! Not sure if I will be back in a hurry!

We’ve just arrived home from a visit to Café Ocho courtesy of a Living Social voucher we bought. Having read the reviews on Unilocal and other review websites we were really looking forward to our afternoon tea, and came away somewhat disappointed. The location and service at Café Ocho were fabulous, a beautiful view across the city to enjoy and the friendly attentive service was great. However… the sandwiches were nothing special, in fact we were a bit suspicious that they were Hovis(other brands of bread are available) pre-sliced bread with pre-made fillings scooped in. The cake selection was indeed a selection, but a selection of Mr Kipling cakes, in this instance we were probably to blame as our expectation of a café such as Ocho is home-baking of which only the scone seemed to be the case. The scone was really nice, beautifully baked, but there seems to be an obsession in Scotland of using«squirty”/aerated cream instead of fresh or clotted which takes away some of the home-baked allure of scones. My girlfriend was also a bit puzzled as to why I was offered numerous coffees and refills, including Lattes, Cappuccinos etc yet when she asked for a green tea on arrival the answer was only Tetley tea included in the offer. Whether this was a financial decision or other was a mystery, especially with the range of coffees I was offered. Would we go back again? Probably not. In such a great location I can see why Café Ocho is popular, but we felt the afternoon tea on offer was not up to the the standard we had expected, and living on the South Side with great places such as Café Eat on offer it is a bit of a trek to get across for some average pre-made fodder.
