This is the only shop of its kind I have ever seen to sell fresh bread and cakes, among their massive variety of goods that rivals your local supermarket. You’ll find fridges stocked with cans and bottles of fizzy drinks, including locals favourites such as Barr’s cream soda and Irn Bru, which are always on offer at three or four for just £1. I am always amazed at what you can find in these places for a quid, and this is the very best of its kind. There are whole aisles dedicated to homeware, with a great selection of plates, glasses and mugs to kit out your kitchen. You can also fill up your bathroom cabinet with all sorts of toiletries and body care items to beautify yourself. Another great thing is that you can even buy DVDs here, including old movies and episodes of friends, for the ridiculously low price of a pound. I can’t rate this place highly enough and I’m a massive fan of anywhere that sells so much stuff for such an amazing price. a firm favourite with students such as myself.

The lure of this place as the largest pound store in the UK was enough to make me dive into here. The size doesn’t really do the store any favours though as they have much the same variety as other pound shops, a few of which are really closeby on Sauchiehall Street, this store just happens to have alot more of them. It’s decent for picking up some random prezzie filler like 100 latex gloves.

It is rather worry that Sauchiehall Street always has at least one pound shop: this is, after all, Glasgow’s main shopping area, and the proliferation of pound shops, while not a worry in less comprehensive areas, does suggest that the area is struggling to attract the big shops. This used to be Littlewoods. Now it is row upon row of items that didn’t make the grade. As always, shop carefully, but the sheer size of this store means it will have something you need. It’s odd to think that I would go to Sauchiehall Street to get cleaning gear, but now I do.

The name kind of gives away what this shop is all about — thousands of products all for just £1…and there really is a bit of everything in here from toys to crafts to clothes to morning rolls! The aisles are so wide which prevents you tripping over buggies or small children(often seems to happen to me in other pound shops) but doesnt detract from the fact that most of the stuff in here is tat. Having said that, there are some bargains to be had(the craft stuff is pretty nice) and as far as pound shops go the range of stock here is pretty impressive. I had to smile to myself when I was in recently and overheard someone asking how much a woolly hat was. Shows that some people just can’t believe how cheap some things are which is a good sign I guess.

The quality of a product should not be measured by the cost but in the case of the Pound Mart then this may be a useful bench mark for deciding if you really need ten lighters for a pound or a bag of 100 lollies. The ethos of this store is cheap, cheap, and cheap and as such many of the products are a bit naff and in many cases they have the life expectancy of an un-watered plant. On the occasions that I have been lured in by the seductive prospect of a cheap deal I have always left feeling sad that so much needless CO2 was emitted to make such a wide and varied selection of complete and utter rubbish!

Ok, there are several hundred pound stores in and around Glasgow, but this place is scary — it’s just so BIG! There are aisles upon aisles of £1 items, 90% of which is utter rubbish — with everything from biscuits, to Matey bubble bath, it’s another one of these ‘it has everything’ stores. Ok, only a small percentage is actually useful, but at least you can laugh at the reeeeeally crap stuff, and try on some bright pink feather boas/green glittery cowboy hats/deely-boppers. Fun times can be had in this store so don’t write it off just yet.
