Great pub with a good atmosphere. Reasonable prices and good craick, what more could you want!

I work about a 2 minute hop-skip-jump away from this bar. I also work with 4 men and no other women in my team. These facts are instrumental as to why I have so many check-ins at this place. «The Rhoddy» as it’s affectionately called in my office is a go-to for most sports watching workers in the area — big TVs guarantee they’ll be showing whatever big sporting event is current, while the West beer St Mungo’s on tap is the biggest crowd puller for my work colleagues. Me? I’m pretty happy they do a decent bottle of rose wine for £8. On a Friday afternoon it’s almost guaranteed standing room only — this is a great after work place for a quick pint or two before heading home. As such, it’s not really where I’d choose to spend a lot of time. Maybe I’m fussy — or just getting older — but I don’t like standing and drinking. It’s especially difficult with a large handbag and a bottle of wine. I’ll keep coming here for post-work drinks with the guys in my team, and it suits me for that purpose.

Nice place, good food, decent beers. During the 6 Nations they are doing a free drink if Scotland wins if you were there before the game started, on current performance they won’t be giving out many :-(add to that there was a free pie at half time, whats not to like. Combine that with being on the«wrong» side of central station it makes it just a little bit quieter, which at my age I like a lot.

Haven’t tried the food here yet, but has always had a great atmosphere whenever I’ve visited, with plenty of quality beers & ales to try.

Another pub across the road from the office. (This is where half the office disappear to at lunchtimes) Great traditional Scottish boozer, the food here is ace and very cheap. A very busy pub on Friday and Saturday nights. They also show live sports during the day on Saturdays. Top notch boozer would defo recommend.

Nice bar, good atmosphere, popular with workers from the nearby offices. Good choice of «on tap» beers at a keen prices. Footie always shown on the(muted) tv’s. Food is the standard pud grub offerings with the usual prices, 2−4−1 deals, etc. Service is fast with no long waits, even at peak periods. Alas, no real ales so only 4 out of 5 stars I’m afraid.

Roddy’s was one of the best remaining free houses in the city centre as most pubs are owned by the big chains like Mitchells & Butlers, Wetherspoons etc. The drink prices are great, far better than anything in the vicinity(discounting dives like The Goose) and the bar staff are excellent. This may all be about to change however as the owner has just sold the pub to the Bellhaven Group. The managers have left along with some staff and the feeling among some of the remaining staff is that they are being«scunnered» by the new owners into leaving to allow them to start new staff on lower wages. You can also bet your house on the fact that the brewers will decrease the measures(quarter gill to a fifth or metric equivalent) and increase the prices in common with their other pubs. I’m a non-smoker so don’t share an earlier comment that the smoke garden is unobtrusive. I’ve been forced to stand at the back of the bar on many a busy Saturday afternoon and everytime the smoke garden door is opened, you get a waft of nicotine blown into the pub making that corner an unpleasant place to stand. I hope i’m proved wrong but I feel the pubs best years are now behind it now it is in Bellhaven’s hands and can only see it deteriorating caused by more expensive drink and less helpful staff.

Not been here for food but it’s a nice pub with a nice atmosphere. Friendly staff, lots of seating and TV screens showing sports are always winners in my book! There’s also an outdoor smoking area to the back of the pub which makes a change from having to smoke out on the street. Sadly no real ale, especially as this place looks like it would go down well…

It’s all too easy for a Scottish pub to become a bland den for pensioners. The Rhoderick Dhu has put a lot of thought into keeping itself up to date with its surroundings, modern culture and seems to have questioned and delivered the basic needs of a pub brilliantly. When you walk in you’ll be delighted the space and well chosen selection of malts. Their«Malt of the Month» comes in at a measly £1.65 and to throw off any stereotypes of Scottish folk being stingy, they serve it up in a a 35ml measure. You’ll find a great atmosphere in here during football matches and can watch it on one of their 10HD televisions around the bar. Their smoking area is one of the best I’ve seen! This pub is a great example of how it should be done. I’d recommend this for both tourists and locals.

A minute’s jaunt from Central Station, the Rhoderick Dhu is a large pub, and winner of the Best Bar None award in 2008. A real spit and sawdust type place, it knows the image it projects, and doesn’t try to hide it.

I love this pub, especially at lunchtime. They serve an excellent selection of pub grub, my particular favourites are the macaroni cheese and homemade steak pie. Service is usually very good, you can be in and out easily in an hour — if you choose of course. There is a smoking area which is very popular and as a non-smoker I can safely say there is no intrusion to those sitting inside by it, even if you sitting beside it. Big screen TVs show football matches(or Andy Murray matches, as was the case when I was there last Friday). It’s always busy at lunchtimes and tables can be booked from either 12 noon or one o’clock. It’s worth making the booking as you run a real risk of disappointment if you don’t.
