First time trying here after walking last it many a time. I wasn’t too fussed to be honest as I had heard it was overpriced. I have been to plenty of typanyaki restaurants around the world which I loved but I think the show is better than the food in most and that was certainly the case for here. This was booked for a work dinner so was a good giggle when they try and throw hot potatoes in to your mouth but be warned they are very hot, I burned my finger catching one and my mouth eating one. The food hmmmm not so good, rice was nice bit veg and steak not that good. They bulk up on the starchy carb type foods and the meat/fish is small portions. For starters I got the ribs but most of it was fat so couldn’t eat a lot of it but to he teriyaki sauce was lovely. They did have a cpl of nice mocktails but again slightly expensive for what you get. I can’t comment of any of the sushi dishes as I am pregnant so wouldn’t know if it is good or not. I liked the show and service was good but won’t be back.

I chose to spend luxuriously on my birthday because … why the heck not eyh? I’ve always wanted to try Sapporo Teppanyaki in Glasgow, just to know what the hype is about! Safe to say that it’s really quite nice haha. Being from Malaysia, teppanyaki-style restaurants are not all that unique. I’m quite used to watching people cook stir-fried veges and meat right in front of me, however, if you want a wee bit of entertainment and a laugh, I think Sapporo is a great place to go to! Especially if you’re in a big group of say 10 – 20. It’d be like a nice dinner party with a chef entertaining you with flashy utensil tricks, egg and potato tossing and some jokes/pranks to keep you giggling while sipping on your pint of Asahi. So between me and the Italian, we ordered 2 sets, the Shojin Ryori(21pounds), and the Emperor(40pounds), and Asahi beers to compliment the food. The Shojin Ryori is a vegetarian option whiles the Emperor has a lot of chicken, meat, half a huge prawn, nigiri sushi, egg fried rice etc. I can say that we were stuffed by the end of the night. The highlight of the night was the beef that they cooked up for us! It was really nice to eat soft juicy meat! Sigh. LOOOOVE. However, not all of the food was great … just ok. I think I prefer the actual teppanyaki dishes they stir-fried and served in front of us rather than the food that they prepared in the kitchen at the back(the rolls, tofu, nigiri weren’t all that great. Seemed not too fresh). The staff members were amazing and friendly! They gave us suggestions and were pretty damn happy. One of the waiters said my eyebrows were on point(w00t w00t achievement unlocked!!). Anyway, if I go back, I think I’ll try some ala carte stuff or just stick to teppanyaki dishes only. I don’t think I’d eat here often though because it’s just far too pricey. Only on special occasions probably! But will definitely recommend to those going in big groups for birthdays or even bonding sessions with your work colleagues haha!

Worst noodles I have ever had, still feeling queasy at thought of them! Covered in butter and not one bit like yakisoba, more like a really bad Chow Mein! The evening itself was very entertaining and the sushi was ok, not great but edible. Our chef was very funny and I loved all the slicing and dicing on the hot plate but its not enough to make me go back.

I went there with my boyfriend’s colleagues. He is going to change his job. So we hold a leaving party. The most amazing thing is the performance of the chief. He is so funny. Catching the potatoes he throw really need some good luck. I didn’t catch it:(the food is also great. And the cocktail there is good. Food there is really nice with big portion. I didn’t finish my dishes from starter to dessert. A little waste. We stay there till late. And saw the waiter how to clean the pan. They use lemon juice to clean! A little bit unhappy is waiting so long time for a glass of water!

This is a place I like to take people that have never been! It’s a real treat and the food is delicious. I love the prawns as they give you a good size portion and they’re mighty huge! I was a little disappointed in the salmon dish that was supposed to have a spicy sauce(not spicy!) We had Mr. Big and he’s brilliant. I enjoyed how he teased us, juggled sharp kitchen knifes and generally entertained us. I had a Gourmet card that offered 2-for-1 on 2 courses. Which is a spectacular deal! They also have an early diner menu for those wanting a cheap set menu before 6pm. I adore the garlic mayo sauce that is provided and I usually have to ask for more! I think this place is ideal for big groups and dates.

When I was asked where I would like to go for my birthday dinner, I chose Sapporo’s! It was super tasty. We got the early dinner offer £16.95 for 3 courses. We drove through from Edinburgh just to go for dinner.

WOW! This was my first Teppanyaki experience and we dined here at the request of my(not-so-little) brother who turned 21 this month. All of us were blown away by the food and the show-cooking. Outstanding stuff! We all opted for Teppanyaki set menus; my mum and I tried the Banzai menu, my dad and brother opted for the Geisha menu and Kris B. chose the Shogun menu(you can view all of Sapporo’s a la carte menu to look at the set dishes here: ). To start, we all had some miso wakame soup(miso soup with tofu). The broth itself was lovely, salty and slightly rich but I’m just not a fan of tofu particularly. We each then had some pre-prepared starters in the form of sushis, smoked chicken rolls, ribs and more. Everyone enjoyed these, I particularly loved my smoked chicken rolls; think like a chicken spring roll, but open-ended and with a slight BBQ flavour. At this point our Teppanyaki chef(his name was Superman!) came out and started preparing our sides and mains and provided our entertainment for the evening. Even if Superman does this routine 20 times a night, he never showed it, he was so enthusiastic and lovely, attentive to everyone sitting at our group table. His showmanship didn’t detract from the main event; the main course! All of our mains were delicious, I had a lamb main and Superman cooked it perfectly to my(medium rare) tastes. All of our food was so delicious and rich, I was actually surprised by how full I was afterwards. I know this sounds weird but I always assumed Japanese cooking and food prep was a lot more lean and healthy but I needed rolling home after eating at Sapporo! The only thing stopping this from being a 5-star review was that some of the waiters/waitresses were a bit slow on the uptake; it took our server nearly 20 mins to notice we wanted more wine, then 15 mins to bring our bill at the end of the meal and he had a general air of «I don’t want to be here.» which left us feeling a bit meh! It wasn’t enough to stop us from going back to try some more food but if I see him again I’ll ask him to plaster on a smile! Overall: a fantastic family for my brother’s 21st and lots of glorious dishes that I want more of!

Visited here as part of a team night out. It’s my second visit to Sapporo and both times have been equally as impressive. To make sense of the experience you have to almost split it into two. There is the ‘restaurant’ part and the ‘entertainment’ part, the fact that both of these revolve around one chef is what makes it all the special. First things first, the food is good. The main courses are cooked fresh in front of you on a hot plate, with starters and desserts appearing from the kitchen. I started with chicken gyoza and it was delicious. My main course, as it was part of our set meal, included some fried potatoes, egg fried rice, fried vegetables and salmon teriyaki. The salmon was wonderfully succulent, very fresh and with two large fillets cooked to perfection, pretty filling too! Of course teppanyaki is about more than the food and our chef didn’t disappoint. The whole premise of teppanyaki is based in catering to tourists/westerners in Japan, so as well as the food being more focused on Western palates, so the chef’s party pieces are an integral part of the experience. I won’t spoil too many of the tricks and surprises, but you’ll already have seen the photos of large flames bursting from the flat grill, quite a sight to see a few feet from you! Sapporo is a fun, lively place which offers good(if not stellar) food but as I said, the food is only part of the experience. Perfect for a crowd, go with an open mind and you’ll have a great time.

I’d only tried teppanyaki once before, back in Melbourne and I remember the experience a lot more than what the food was like. While Japanese is my favourite cuisine, I always thought it would be better to visit here in a group rather than as a couple as it would be more fun. We visited on Saturday night for my father-in-law’s bday and in the lead up, I think I’d read the menu about 15 times — that’s how excited I was. When we arrived, we were told to take a seat in the bar area. This space reminded me a lot of a hotel bar and could do with some jazzing up to make it more interesting. I had an Elderflower Breeze mocktail — elderflower and apple juice — while we waited which was really sweet and refreshing and I’d definitely order that again. We were given an electronic buzzer to go back to the reception area when it went off. I think this is unnecessary given the size of the place as surely they could remember who you are in the 20 minutes you wait to be seated. We were then seated at a table with a really large group of 20-somethings on a night out which I was initially worried about but thankfully they were all lovely and didn’t seem to mind us on the end of their table. I felt like I’d been waiting ages to order by the time we finally did as it was nearly 7.30(our booking had been for 7pm). So keep this in mind if you have a tendency to get hangry. From here on in, the night really improved — so much so it still gets a 5 star score. We opted for the shogun menu at £25 pp(although important to note they put 10% on all bills so factor that in!). I thought it didn’t seem like much food but in the end I really struggled to finish everything. There was chicken gyoza to start — this was tasty and I always enjoy gyoza. These arrived really quickly and I was glad as I was getting really hungry by this point. Our chef for the night was Mr Big and he was exceptional, really funny and good banter. We watched as he cooked up some sauteed potatoes which he then gets you to catch in your mouth. From my last teppanyaki experience I was expecting to have more food thrown at me but thankfully that was it. While he entertained us, we had grilled vegetables and fried rice. There was a choice of chicken or salmon for main and I was pleased I went with the salmon as it was a really generous portion and cooked really well with a crispy outside and still soft in the middle. I didn’t expect to get two fillets but was very excited when I did. To finish I had the Japanese Yuzu cheesecake. To me it tasted pretty plain, just like normal cheesecake and I would have liked more of a yuzu kick. I also tried a Mojito which was nice although because it was made with Midori I’d have to say I preferred the taste of the mocktail more!(I’m not 18 any more, after all). Service was good and we were regularly checked up on for more drinks. There was one misunderstanding with the waitress when I asked for tap water and this seemed to confuse her — and then the water never appeared but the rest of the drinks order did. I’ve got for a 5 star rating because it was a really fun night — the chef was very entertaining and really made it a night to remember. I was really impressed with the food as well and even though it initially seems like an expensive way to dine, you really do get a lot of food(and the entertainment, of course).

How to review this place is a bit of a tricky question. If it as an entertainment venue then it would probably be 4 stars. As a food destination it is more likely to be 3 stars. When I was there last week the place was bulging with other diners on what seemed to be Christmas nights out with colleagues. So we were surrounded by Christmas hats, crackers and excessive laughter. It actually made for quite good a atmosphere and during the festive time of year it seemed just about right. You are seated at a hot plate with lots of other guests and chefs come into the middle and cook your food for you. We decided to go with the Christmas set menu, which is quite pricey at £30 per head, but you do get four courses. I had fish soup to start which was ok, chicken satay next which was fairly average, beef fillet for main which was small but lovely and finished up with caramel cheesecake. The latter was nice, but struck me as being a bit like a frozen cheesecake you would get from a supermarket. In between these courses you get fried potatoes,(yes in a Japanese restaurant — it is Glasgow after all), these are thrown at you by the chef and you are expected to catch them in your mouth.(No I am not joking) You also get egg fried rice and some mixed veg all cooked on the hot plate in front of you. At various points during the meal, the chefs will set fire to the hot plates and juggle cooking implement’s for your entertainment. On the beer front I had a Kirin which was lovely and they seemed to have a decent selection of options. This is the type of place which is good to take friends on a night out for something different and to have a bit of entertainment with your food, but not somewhere you would go to for the quality of meal you will receive. As a place to have dinner, I can only give it 3 stars.

My eyes nearly fell out my head when I found out I was going here for my birthday. Yasss! I have been wanting to go for a long time now but as it’s a bit on the expensive side it’s put me off. Fortunately it was through an itison deal and it brought the cost down my a massive amount. It was only £19 for 2 people and 2 courses and you still get the pleasure of the Sapporo«experience». Sapporo is a show chef bar, so we had Superman, I kid you not, as our chef. He had a Superman belt and it said on his name badge so it must be true. We sat along with a couple who I believe were from Mauritius, mmm maybe it was Malaysia. Anyhoo, we ordered our drinks and food, which we ordered from an itison menu that Sapporo had created. They must be doing many of these deals, I would double check they are still available as it was it worth it. The sushi was good and the main course was amazing. Superman had many tricks up his sleeve, jumping out your skin most of the time to be honest. They suggest that you tuck in while he’s cooking, as it’ll just get cold otherwise. Not only Superman but other chef’s do make many noises and beware you will also sound like them after a while. Hehe! I swear one of them had a laugh like a looney toon character from Who Framed Rodger Rabbit. I don’t want to give away the show as I’m glad I didn’t know as I really enjoyed it. It was cheesy but a good laugh, probably even better in a larger group. I need to find out what he used to cook the stir-fry veg as I’ve never tastied anything like it. The Teriyaki sauce was also delicious including their fried rice. It’s an experience, so I say chillax and just enjoy.

If you’re the shy, retiring type then possibly this isn’t the place for you… but if you love good food and being entertained whilst you eat(I wasn’t too sure about this but it was actually really fun) then you’ve got to try this place out. Even if you’re not a fan of Japanese food, so long as you like potatoes, rice and steak you’re going to enjoy this. This place is on the pricey end for restaurants in Glasgow, but the quality and dedication of the chefs, the excellent food and the overall atmosphere makes it a great treat. Good Japanese beers available too.
