This church café operates during term time serving up cheap lunches to students and anyone else who pops in. It’s partially staffed by volunteers and is a non-profit endevour. The Crypt is like a pleasant cafeteria. You collect your food on a tray, pay and then take a seat. The tables are all set up for six people so you often end up sharing unless you’re in with a group. Food wise there’s soup, toasties, pies, salad bowls, macaroni cheese, pizza slices, baked potatoes and some dessert options like traybakes on offer. I’ve found the food to be quite basic but not bad and it’s cheap. My tomato soup and cheese and ham toastie cost £4. There are quite a lot of café options in the West End where I think the food is better and similarly priced but if I was a student or working at the uni I imagine The Crypt would come in handy for a short lunch break. It’s also a lot more spacious than most places so you could get your laptop out or catch up on some reading without feeling like you’re hogging a table. I’d definitely upgrade to four stars if they got a bit more inventive with the food.

Very cute, friendly place right near Uni Glasgow and Kelvingrove Park on the West end. Prices for lunch are very inexpensive but the place tends to be packed every time I’m in there… so I usually have to get something to go which means I can only get a select few items. They serve pies, baked potatoes, cakes, soups and so on. They also have hot and cold drinks and candy bars up front. Make sure you pay in cash or coins because they don’t accept cards.

I spent many a lunch in my first year of Uni here — truely a delightful escape from the smelly clutches of the QMU food hall which seemed to trap many of my other fellows. The old ladies who serve are just delightful — as Darryl and Lewis point out, and the food is wholesome and yum. However, I gradually stopped going as I noticed the old ladies were taking advantage of their rising popularity(or maybe just suffering from lack of eyesight) and reducing their soup portions but charging the same. Then, the soup started tasting more watery… So I said goodbye, I won’t be fooled by their sweet little old faces. Though it may have changed now, and it’s definitely worth a visit regardless as it’s quite unique; you won’t find many places quite like it.

The Crypt is the sort of place that reminds me of an old people’s café back home in the shire. It’s not the most amazing of places, but personally, I really like it. There’s a wide range of cheap lunch stuffs — sandwiches, baked potatoes, traybakes, cakes, home made soups, etc. The volunteers behind the counter are the sweetest older peoples ever — they always make a point of saying hello and asking how your day’s going etc. Awww! Sometimes it can be quite crowded as there is limited space, but most people will happily shuffle up to let you join their table — it’s very welcoming. I’d recommend a visit — even if it’s just to buy a traybake(the malteaser tiffin is amazing!).
