The Overlee

Ok I said I wouldn’t go back but my daughter wanted to go for lunch so we went had a baguette with bbq chicken (well chicken with bbq sauce) n chips with some leaves? wouldn’t call it salad. It was a bit dry chips rubbish, Daughter had macaroni says it was ok bit tasteless granddaughter had fish fingers says they were nice. Staff well what can I say we sat in a booth coz they have a tv to which is great if you have kids so asked to have this put on the woman looked a bit grumpy lol and said she will see if it works that the satellite doesn’t always pic up the signal (well the one next to us was fine) not a smile nothing form this woman (obviously in the wrong job) she puts the tv on and walks away wtf no volume is she for real ??? had to go and ask the bartender to turn it up DONT THINK I WILL GO BACK

It saddens me to downgrade a crap review to be even crappier. But I just don’t like this place.
I stand by every word of my previous review but thought I’d add the following.
It’s good that Clarkson actually has a bar.
It’s good that it’s really busy.
It’s good that it attracts a pretty diverse mix of customers.
The nachos were great.
The toilets are huge, and clean.
It’s clearly trying to be a sports bar, but designed around a living room.
I don’t like the lamps hanging from the ceiling, rather than standing up on the floor, or the doors embedded horizontally in the wall — anyone have a sledgehammer handy?
The volume on the multitude of tv’s was muted when we arrived. As soon as the football went on, it was blaring.
You can’t look anywhere without seeing a tv here.
The beer has been hiked up in price almost a fiver for a point of St Mungo or a bottle of Punk IPA.
I can’t wait to not go back. Overlee, you are now a last resort. :(

I went here on a Monday night to watch the football and catch up with a mate.
We chose a booth with an individual TV screen which was great to watch the game and chat. This, in my opinion, is a great idea as not everyone likes to be among the crowd l, but still want to watch the game.
We ordered food, I had buffalo wings (Piri Piri) to start and a Bacon Cheeburger for main. My mate had small Mac n Cheese to start and the pulled pork burger. We were asked if we wanted it all at once or starters first… An obvious choice.
Well my mates burger arrived first. Then the starters. Then my burger. Though the burgers were a bit bland, the mac n Cheese was nice and the wings were good, Piri sauce was very good. And you get plenty of food. Though perhaps less chips and better meat for the burgers would be better?
I’d go back, but possibly just order a selection of starters instead of a main meal.
They all come at once anyway so is it really a starter?

I returned for a bit of lunner (lunch/​dinner) this weekend. I managed to get a better seat to start with which made the experience more pleasant. We both ordered burgers, me the pulled pork burger and Mrs F the veggie option. Both were OK, and an improvement on the last meal we had here.
Encouraged, we ordered dessert and teas. My chocolate fudge cake was OK, and tasty enough. However, when my teapot and cup arrived that hard earned third star dissipated. With at least three recognisable different food groups welded to the inside, I asked for a new clean cup which came, but not without ruining the experience somewhat.
Families still seem to love the place however, as children can run about between everyone else without any shame, embarrassment or common courtesy on the part of their parents.

Opening just last week, the Overlee opened where Clark & Sons (and the Rascasse before that) used to be. I don’t know what happened to Clark & Sons, it seemed to close pretty quickly and then stayed closed while it got refitted to become part of the Belhaven group of pubs.
On first impressions, I like what they’ve done with the décor and layout. There’s still a separate bar area from the restaurant, and the dining spaces are more split up now so it doesn’t feel like a huge big dining area. There’s some nice chandeliers and décor on the walls which shows they’ve put quite a bit of effort into it.
That’s until you get to the menu. I’m not even sure it rates as standard pub grub — it is pretty uninspiring with options like buckets of wings, 13 different burger options (yes, 13) as well as standard mains and steaks. You can order certain mains at £10.99 for two, or they have two rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £19.99. I opted for a sirloin steak with garlic mushrooms (£12.70 all up). You need to order at the bar but they do have table service if you go to the bar to order drinks (which makes me wonder why they can’t just do table service).
I felt like we waited ages for our food, but there was a group of 6 of us and it was relatively busy for a Monday. It was probably at least a 30 minute wait, if not 45 minutes. My steak arrived with chips, tomato, peas and mushrooms but without the garlic mushrooms I’d ordered. They came separately in a bucket and were breaded, certainly not the garlic mushroom sauce I’d expected but the menu is pretty vague on that point. The chips were soft and mushy and bland and needed lots of seasoning. We were sharing a portion of onion rings which were also soft and bland. My steak was overcooked (I’d ordered medium rare, it was well done) and again — bland. I slathered on seasoning and sauce and got through it — the cut of steak was fine but I really don’t enjoy my meat that well cooked!
This pub is very family friendly. We were seated in an area with lots of kids, where the parents were letting them run around the restaurant and our table. There’s loads of seating though so perhaps they could have a separate family-​friendly area.
There’s a good selection of beers including Anchor Steam, Brooklyn Lager, Sam Adams, Twisted Thistle, BrewDog, Williams Bros and West. I really couldn’t see that I’ll return for the food, but I’d head back for a drink in the bar area.
