Thought it was about time I did a wee update on the Roxy 171 as I have recently visited the place twice in the space of a few weeks to see some live bands. On my first visit here I must admit I didn’t even realise they had live bands on as I wasn’t sure where exactly the bands would play… I assumed it would be downstairs somewhere but having never ventured into the ‘secret and mysterious downstairs room’ before I was completely unsure of it’s size of what it even looked liked. In my mind I imagined it to be a cross between the old Captain’s Rest(RIP) and the newer Broadcast(which is effectively the ‘new’ Captain’s Rest) — quite a smallish area but maybe not quite a wee as the 13th Note… well when we arrived for the gig(a friends band were supporting a post-punk band from Italy), after paying the people at the door downstairs(great thing about here is that the gigs are pretty cheap) both myself & my boyfriend were a bit taken aback by just how wee the space is! Ooft. Space-wise it is much smaller than the 13th Note, maybe about 40+ capacity(It mentions 70 on the website but I can’t even imagine how cramped it would be — but maybe that’s without a band playing?) but it does have a bar downstairs which is really good/handy. There were a couple of small tables & a few chairs but that was it. After a chat with our friend we made our way to the bar & I noticed they had a rum(I had never heard of!) & mixer deal on for a good price(£2 I think?) alongside some other drinks promos. The rum was lovely & they also sell some decent pints in the downstairs bar too(William’s Bros. Joker for one). When the first band came on we managed to secure a wee spot to the left and we were quite near the front(although in a place this small you can’t really be THAT far away anyway!) and it was LOUD! Jings! Luckily I had(as usual) a trusty tissue in my bag to make myself a pair of DIY earplugs, ha ha! Brilliant Blue Peter job if I do say so myself :-) Being such a small venue it is going to be loud so do prepare yourself/your ears for that. I have been to waaaaaaaay too many gigs in my life to know how annoying tinnitus is! *squeeeaaaaal!* Bah. I had a really great night at this gig & again in the following week or so at another gig in here. One of the bands even had us all(yep, ALL of the crowd!) up on stage whilst they played to us from where we had all been standing — it was very funny even though I was getting crushed against a monitor! Ha ha! They were crazy dudes. All in all I have to say I am rather fond of this wee, almost cute, venue. It’s always a good price, you can catch some brilliant local & non-local bands playing here and the added benefit of the bar being right there is just too handy. The toilets are also right outside in the corridor, also downstairs, so that’s great too for when you have had one too many promo drinkies ;-) I am a fan of intimate venues — the 13th Note is still one of my favourites in Glasgow & The Roxy 171 reminds me of it quite a bit(just on a smaller scale and a bit newer/spruced up). I am so glad we decided to pop out that first night and see what the place was like as I can see myself coming here again & again in the future. With the nice menu/food upstairs too, great drinks selection AND it being a mere skip & jump away from St. George’s Cross subway station The Roxy 171 is one handy dandy wee music venue in good old Glasgow town.

Love this place. A great pub with a wee kitchen making some fantastic grub. The music is great and cranked up a notch in the evening to change the mood. The staff are always very friendly and efficient. We last went on a Saturday night on a voucher deal and I felt liked I’d robbed them, it was such good value. Highly recommend the burgers and the lamb Kofti, which pack a spicy punch and come with lots of tasty additions.

Had a great itison deal in here last week, £9 for any main course for 2… and boy they didn’t disappoint. Lively yet relaxed atmosphere with a great selection of beers. They pride themselves on their legendary burgers but what’s legendary for me was their Tuna and Anchovy Taco style pizza. three words… TODIEFOR!!! Can’t get enough of Anchovies! It always baffles me why its suddenly become a rarity for pizza places to have them on the menu, they used to be a common occurrence. Why? Over fishing? I seriously doubt it. For their Gastro pub classics I give these guys a big thumbs up!

Im here regularly now for a ‘thing’ every tuesday and think its a cracking place. They havent done much with the place since its previous incantation but it didnt need much. The prices are cracking, beers and spirits coming around in at about £3, a fantastic spirit & beer selection for your money with a wheat beer on tap that keeps winking at me. Food looks awesome and will definitely be eating there at some point.

Tempted by a voucher deal, we were so impressed by the menu and the burgers we chose were outstanding. Even the homemade coleslaw and potato salad were brilliant. We’ve been back for burgers since and will make it a ‘usual’. First visit we tried the beef burger and the veggie burger. The beef burgers are juicy, well cooked and a satisfying fistful. They come with a gherkin outside of the bun, which is pretty considerate, given its ‘marmite’ reputation. The veggie burger was refreshingly original with the addition of goats cheese leaving your belly full. There were plenty of toppings to choose from too. The only issue was trying to pick up the burger to eat it. A tip would be to leave the skewer in as much as possible! At our last visit we chose the £20 meal deal, which is two mains with a bottle of wine or four pints. The staff are really friendly too and the place has a great atmosphere, welcoming all ages.

As the gents have previously stated, the Liquid Ship has set sail, leaving space for Roxy to move in for the kill. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the black exterior — cool, retro but perhaps a bit unwelcoming — but nevertheless myself and a pal were curious. Went inside on opening night — you could still smell the paint and there was a buzz in the air. The staff were a bunch of livewires, and all hands were definitely on deck to give out a great dining experience. A very friendly, professional waitress advised us to get stuck in to some antipasti, which was delicious! Shared a portion between us and it was enough to fill us up. Lovely food, good service and good beers and ciders on tap(ADDELSTONES, YAY!) Hopefully this hip little place shan’t be too overshadowed by the Captain’s Rest, but if you’re looking for something a bit more glam it offers a nice alternative since it’s not a carbon copy of other bars in the area.

The ship has sunk. Not to go on about it since most pub reviews in Glasgow Unilocal could be an excuse for individuals to pine for a past boozer. Big black exterior and a couple chairs for pints in warmer times of the year. This was not one of them so we got out of the Glasgow Autumn chill. Inside, Roxies is a bright and relaxing space with decent beer selection. They even had a Vodka that Chris had been talking about earlier in the evening. So, alcohol selection is pretty decent. However, the focus of this place is food. The placemats are menus with a reasonable but not over-extended selection. I usually see this as a good sign. I like a place that can put all of their menu items on a single page. More than that and we are usually dealing with a lot of pre-made frozen dinners or pre-plated meals. My most favourite places serve a single dish — one thing that they do better than anyone else. Keep an eye out for those places — and tell me when you find them. Definite themes in the menu. Classic american with a pulled pork, tex-mex theme running through it. Had the nachos and the pulled pork was overwhelmed by the delicious chilli spices. Maybe not the best place to show it off and not sure if it added anything. The venue is still downstairs which hosts live acts on occasion. The only trouble with this place is the powerhouse of the Rest next door. Captains Rest has come to dominate this end of Great Western Road, hopefully Roxies does not become an afterthought. But if you find yourself at the St. Georges end of GWR — get your butt in here. Definitely worth a visit.

The ship has sailed and been replaced by something much, much more to my liking. I know the Liquid Ship always recieved great reviews and had a keen following, but there was just something about it that just never tickled my fancy. Now though, the Roxy 171 is just my bag mutha! Not sure I’m the best person to descriube the new interior«it had paint on the walls and stuf», but it just feels a little titghter, neater, crisp and eh… funky? Aye, that about covers it. Fine tunes, stupid looking menu(pulled pork sloppy joe anyone??), friendly staff, great selection of booze(Pincer vodka!) and a welcoming atmoshpere all make me want to call this my local and return here for ever more. I like, you should try. You will like. Stuff.
