While the Rosevale and the Hayburn are the two main Rangers pubs in Partick, the Dolphin and the Smiddy are the main Celtic ones. While showing little sign of being a Celtic pub during the day, there are however a few Sky TV screens which regularly show live football, as well as horse racing on my visit. There appeared, even during the day, to be more of a younger crowd in evidence than most of the nearby pubs — with a good few 30 – 40 year olds sharing the pub with the older guys. It appeared also to be fairly busy for an aftenoon compared to most of the other ones. The décor inside is a bit drab though and you get the real feeling that something is missing. Maybe its the lack of a nice carpet. Or the big windows that, dare I say, give it a bit TOOMUCH daylight perhaps? Although I have criticised the Thornwood and the Hayburn, they are at least nicely decorated and have a warm, welcoming feel to them, whereas the Smiddy just looks like its an old warehouse thats had a bar and seats stuck in it. There also seemed to be a bad smell near the bar that was like a mixture of chlorine and B.O. Thankfully the prices are okay, with for example £2.59 for a Tennents, with the bonus of getting regular or Ice Cold. But the place itself could really do with getting spruced up.
