Come to Times Square if you want to be ignored as the staff struggle with the huge crowds of well…4 customers. Went to bar twice only to be ignored twice, had to leave and go to The Royal Scot which had 40 customers, they served me within 30 seconds, Times Square get your staff trained and you may be full at lunch time too.

I arrived here in a foul mood, thanks to what can only be described as a knuckledragging mouth breather on the train. Spend the entire journey sat next to me, while sniffing? Indeed! Also, just before getting off, the nose was wiped along the length of his sleeve. Ugh. None of this is relevant, but it’s just to explain to the people waiting for me that I wasn’t a raging alcoholic and I had a pressing need to get a pint to try and regain some sanity! As for Times Square itself, as I said when I was here — I hadn’t been in for about 8 – 10 years… and it hadn’t changed a bit. The décor was exactly the same. The atmosphere was exactly the same. Pretty sure some of the staff were the same too, being brutally honest. It’s just«a pub» in the city centre. It could be any pub, anywhere, at any time. It’s not a Wetherspoons, but it’s a good impression of one. It is the quintessential«let’s meet here then head off» kind of place. You could do a lot worse, but you also do far, far better. Plus they also play Phil Collins music without warning in hours of daylight. There’s no excuse for that.

Here starts the subcrawl reviews, and where better to start than pub #1. We visited about 1pm on a Saturday and I’d say it was pretty quiet in here — there were a few empty seats and some regular punters who didn’t seem all that impressed with a large squad descending, but then who can blame them? The décor is nothing exciting and it looks like a generic chain pub kind of place. They have a diner area next door but we were in the pub area. Service was fine, efficient and perfunctory and the drinks were pretty cheap. I opted for a Strongbow which pretty much tastes the same where ever you go, so that’s always reassuring. We stayed for a while, drank our dranks and headed on our way. Would I head back? Probably not. Was this pub memorable? Not really — pretty bland, generic and not all that interesting.

This was the first stop on the subcrawl and therefore it was one of the pubs that I was most aware of my surroundings and the people that were sharing the drinking space with me. It felt like one of those moments when time stands still and everybody looks over to you as you walk through the door. Anyways, once we ordered a beer and grabbed some seats it felt ok for a one off drink. The regulars went back to their conversation and forgot the newcomers who had invaded their territory. High point for me is that they sold Budvar! A good drink and not one I expected to be on offer. Most of the other beers looked like pretty boring standard low spec options. The low point was when somebody tried to remove the menu POS from its holder. That sticky icky pleeehh noise it made as it came out summed up the bar in general. This is not somewhere I would normally drink in and I can’t imagine being back(well until the 2nd annual subcrawl). I nearly gave this a one, but the Budvar just creeps it up to a two… I have to highlight the just! 1.5 would perhaps be the best right mark.

My father and i wanted to go to an Italian place for some pasta, we had a look online and booked up for a place called«Bistro», little did we know, this was what was coming. Not an Italian restaurant, but a pub. The rain was coming down so heavy that we decided just to give the place a chance, and we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very friendly and we had drinks and menu’s in a matter of minutes. After some serious trouble deciding, the food looked incredible and there was so much to choose from, i decided upon the ‘New York Chicken’ which was chicken breast with mozzarella and smoked BBQ sauce. My old man picked their speciality which was a large hot-dog with onions and american mustard.(He was warned that it was very big and boy were they right) In a short period of time, our food arrived hot and nicely presented. My chicken was cooked perfectly and not pink at all, i have no complaints and was full in no time. My fathers food arrived and was overflowing the plate because it was so large! He ate most of the hot-dog and left ALL the sides. Food was good and i was pleased after having so much trouble in the flood weather. It was a nice place if you were maybe looking for quick lunch, i am not a fan of pub lunches but if i had to, i would choose here. If you are hungry and in the area, pay it a little visit. Its cheap and lovely…(and nice and warm)

Cheap as chips and a regular place for me to go to when looking for a cheap brunch for 2 on a Sunday. The £10 for 2 lunches makes this place a favourite. Even if you fall outside the deal its affordable for anyone. Its close to Central station as well.

Times Square is a popular lunchtime destination for workers in the city looking for a quick pint and some pub grub. The food isn’t amazing but, you know that way when you just want to grab something unhealthy and scram it all down without a care in the world? I like it for that. At night I’d try to avoid it because St. Enoch Square can be a bit troublesome after dark. If you’re about town during the day and want to fill yourself up with not a lot of care as to the the quality of the food then you can get reasonable value for money in here.

Situated in St Enoch square is the Times Square public house. It is a traditional watering hole in the heart of merchant city. The pub is often at its busiest in the evenings when punters pop in for a post shift pint and to relax in the warm familiar atmospheare. The clientele is mostly modest worker who are in for a quick drink after a hard days slog so try not to spill any one’s pint! Speaking of pints a major benefit of drinking in these veteran hang outs is that they pour a much better pint than most of the slinky hang outs of the modern city slickers. They also have a much better selection of cast ales and laers. The Times Square is no different, an honest traditional pub indeed.
