I love Tortolano’s. I love it so much it makes me want ice cream in the middle of winter! Their ice cream is definitely one of my very favourites(vying for the top spot with Equi’s) and has been a staple of my life, growing up in Uddy. It used to be based in a much smaller shop and only did ice cream and sweets — sugar mice ftw! — but since moving to a larger establishment they are also now a chippy. Unfortunately I’m not hugely keen on their fried offerings, not that I’ve tried them that many times as I live very very near Enzo’s, so I’m never gonna trek up the Main St for something else! The ice cream is the main attraction for most people anyway. They do a decent range of flavours, my favourite being raspberry ripple were I forced to choose, and while it is a bit pricey, it is completely and utterly worth it. You try having some and then tell me it isn’t! They still sell chocolates, old-fashioned sweets and other things, which change seasonally. I still sometimes think about the summer of ’02 when they did Blue Cloud(bubblegum flavoured) ice cream and blew everyone’s frickin MINDS, it was a particular hit with the kids at my school. Good times. Why four stars? The reception you get in there is sometimes a bit icy(pun fully intended) and I always feel a bit awkward in there rather than being welcomed as a paying customer, but that too is worth putting up with!(Did I mention the ice cream is good? It’s good.)

As far as sweet teeth go, I have been blessed with a mouth full of them. Cakes, chocolate, toffees and creams, I love them all. One of my particular favourite comfort foods has to be a tub of yummy ice cream. I love nothing better than settling down in front of a good movie with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s, only to look down half way through the film and realise I’ve polished off the lot. The hunt for the best Ice cream in Scotland is one that I would happily dedicate my life to, and I think I found a pretty good contender in the unlikely town of Uddingston. Tortolano’s has been in Uddingston for years, and is well known amongst the locals as an excellent place to buy some chilly, creamy goodness. The reputation hasn’t just been contained amongst the villagers however, and its not unusual to hear people raving about it as far afield as Glasgow. The vanilla ice cream that I tried was to die for; delicious and creamy, with a gooey, almost stringy consistency which is really unusual for ice cream! It makes it much more indulgent, which can only be a good thing for me! It’s churned from what can only be described as the oldest ice cream machine in Scotland, a bit rusty looking, but if that what it takes to make it great then I don’t care! Pricey, but well, well worth it! If you can, leave the Ben and Jerry’s in the supermarket and treat yourself to a tub from Tortolano’s!
