Update to my post based on what Jamie K wrote. I actually work for a competitor of UNITE now and have done for some time, I have no ties with them whatsoever and couldn’t care less if they were doing well or not. I was part-time employed with them briefly during my studies, long-before I wrote my initial review, rest assured I am truthful when I say the experience was brilliant at Blackfriars. I am still very close friends with the flatmates I had there, and can’t fault anything about it.

Deary, deary me. Where to begin? Operated by UNITE, Blackfriars sounds as though it would tick all the boxes — minutes from Strathclyde University, beside High Street train station and only a brisk walk from the main hub of the city centre. Yet, having endured a nightmare stay in this nine-storey pigsty, I always advise people to avoid at all costs. Staff were useless, the fire alarm sounded every second night, and I even had my nose broken one evening, as the main entrance once more lay off the hinges, open to absolutely anybody. I was jumped the moment I tried to enter the building, walked about with two black eyes for well over a week and later had to attend court, giving evidence in the middle of my exam period. Did I hear a peep from the«UK’s leading developer of student accommodation»? Perhaps even a hint of remorse? Don’t be stupid. To add insult to injury, I was soon told that 80% of my deposit would not be refunded due to the«poor condition of my room», which had been meticulously cleaned from top to bottom. After the threat of legal action, the powers that be miraculously saw sense and suddenly returned all of my money — no apology, naturally. Don’t forget the fact that this place is ludicrously overpriced, either. The rooms are like shoeboxes, and the walls are paper thin, so get ready to listen to your neighbours having sex, being sick and sobbing down the phone. The entire place has a Travelodge feel and is a complete misery to live in. I’m sure by now a few of you are thinking ‘christ, this guy’s a grump — I’d love to see his TripAdvisor stuff’, but believe me, I’m being completely honest here. Do yourself a MASSIVEFAVOUR and find a flat through Gumtree. UPDATE: I should also add that the other reviewer, John W, was employed by UNITE. In fact, he’s even in the promotional photos on their website, and the one on this very page! Take a look! Hardly an impartial observer, I’m sure you’ll agree.
