You know the places that you follow your nose to? Hallam’s is that kind of place. I have walked by on many occasions and smelled all sorts of lovely and delicious smells, but never stopped in. Today, I was determined that I would have lunch there. There are menu boards, but there are also specials listed all over the place… a board outside, some flyers with different specials… so you need to look at everything, before you place your order. Case in point: Today I saw a special… half of one of their classic sandwiches and a cup of the soup of the day. When I found a seat at a table, at the bottom of the board hanging up next to my table was a Chicken Salad that sounded lovely. Then as I was sitting down, I saw another flyer that I didn’t see about a Parma Ham sandwich with sundried tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. As I was standing there waiting to make my order, there were loads of lovely baked goods behind me on the table. Carrot muffins, Victoria Sponge, biscuits, bars, fruit bread… delicious! While you wait for your order to be brought to you, there is the rest of the store that you can take a look around. Wine, local brewed ales, biscuits, chutneys, jams, truffles… they may not have everything, but they probably have a number of items you would want. I ordered the soup of the day, which is always a vegetarian option and the roast chicken sandwich. The soup was a parsnip soup… not sure if there was something else in it as it was not posted on the board. The soup was a lovely texture… very smooth, but creamy, didn’t split like some do. I wasn’t a huge fan of the soup, but everyone else that ordered it seemed to really like it. Maybe I don’t like parsnips afterall. Anyway, the sandwich was nice… I chose the granery bread. The granery bread was was thick and fluffy, the chicken was nice and tender. With a drink and my special, it was £6.08… which was not too bad. I had a colleague that had gone and had their beans on toast. He said it was wonderful because they made their own beans with roasted tomatoes. And apparently they are also known for their baked potatoes as they bake them with garlic, olive oil, and rosemary… then you can choose your toppings… just butter, 1 topping, or 2 toppings. If you are a cheese fan, this is also the place for you… a rare foodie experience in Grantham!
