Although I find Harrogate a bit snobby, this establishment pub is not pretentious and elitist like other places there. The atmosphere is ambient and relaxing, which is a big bonus in a pub that serves real ales. Good boozing place.

The oldest pub in Harrogate, its definitely interesting. In some ways it reminds me if some Edinburgh pubs high ceilings decorative etc. Loads of stuffed birds on walls. Its definitely got uniqueness. Sic real ales on tap well kept.

6 real ales on, quirky décor(lots of cased stuffed birds, working bar-top gas cigar lighters(mind out with a long beard)) along with the more traditional local area old photos etc. and the owner inconspicuously sitting amongst the clientele all combine to make this a decently cosy place for a few pints. We visited on Easter Sunday so the atmosphere was maybe not typical for that day of the week normally but it was certainly convivial.

I was there Thursday night and it was the best night out for ages. The karaōke was excellent and the atmosphere was awesome! A very friendly pub with great staff and customers. I found the beer about 10p per pint more than some other bars in town(mentioning no names) However, if I were to drink 10 pints(and I can’t) that would be an extra £1.00. Money well spent I think. Just to be in a nice place with nice people drinking quality beer and fantastic entertainment thrown in too! Give it a go! You won’t be dissapointed.

Now after all that extravagance I fancy some ye olde action. You can stick an «e» on anything in my book to make it appear old but the Hales bar needs no such gimmick. This is steeped in history. In fact the premises were rebuilt in 1827 so you know we’re talking real age here. You’ll find interesting features and fittings from the Victorian era, including traditional gas lighting and cigar lighters. This is Jack the Ripper stuff only without the brutal murders. It’s housed in a beautiful looking building and doesn’t belie what features inside. The food doesn’t disappoint either and a lot of people plump for the pie. It’s how pies should be. You can grab a snack or a sandwich though without a problem. The beer is also up to scratch and they are regularly featured in the good beer guide. Enough said. It’s like stepping back into time this gem and a great place to share a Sunday lunch with the family, especially the dad.

Older style boozer, high bar with busy barmaid. On Thursday night the atmosphere was pretty loud and raucous, due to the contractors who occupied one end of the bar. Beer is not cheap for such an ‘ordinary’ pub. It’s OK, but I wouldn’t rush.
