When 8 adults travel and dine together it’s not unusual for at least one to have a disappointing experience. Not so however, at The Old Nags Head in Castleton Derbyshire England, where English food is at its best. Eight wonderful meals, great food, well prepared and served with a smile. Good beers too, with a selection worthy of any good English pub! The meals were HUGE, and well received by our party. Well done Nags head staff! Highly recommended.

The rooms did not have a shower(only a bath) and were quite small, however service was good and the breakfasts were lovely. The pub itself was warm and cosy with log fires. We had a Mother’s Day lunch but the food was not great however my parents said it had been better recently. The pub is prime position in Castletown — I would head back for a drink due to the atmosphere but not food.

The joys of a damn good British pub that serves damn good British food really are understated and on this occasion we were lucky to find a place that was homely and relaxed while also showcasing some decent beers and a damn fine pub grub menu. Shockingly due to being in the countryside(lack of internet and us only just starting to get this neck of the woods on the Unilocal map), I had to use good old fashioned friend recommendations(my sister in law actually) to find this place — but it was a solid suggestion and one that I’d like to check out again. Their big thing is sausages which they serve in giant Yorkshire puds — with your choice of sausage, choice of mash and choice of gravy — phew, too many choices and on this occasion I wasn’t up for a banger but 3 of our party had these and they looked pretty damn incredible! Being a pub lasagna fiend I was well after this and with a side of garlic bread I mopped up a lovely beef dish that was exactly what the doc ordered — and this like all the mains came in at under a tenner which is pretty good value as you could see that everything was clearly home made. Friendly staff, a good setting and in a village with quite a few food and drink options — it could be a good choice to stay here for a day or two if you’re looking for holiday spots.

Can’t believe this place has not been reviewed yet! It has an amazing selection of real ale and it was packed out for food. I never had any food but people were queuing to get in, they did not seem to take bookings. The menu looked extensive but the most popular things seemed to be bangers and mash with a twist. You get it pick you own mash(onion, mustard mash), own sausages(pork and tomato, pork and apple, pork and chorizo) and your own gravy(onion gravy etc). Looked very tasty. The inside was quite small but there were dining rooms upstairs but these were not open for some reason. They had a good selection of games as well. We attempted dominoes but then realise that neither of us knew how to play! The ales were all by Bradfield but there were about 7 hand pumps as with the amount of pump clips all over the pub, it looks like these change regularly.
