The Marquis At Alkham

Food was absolutely fantastic, really enjoyed it. The service once seated was great, but was left waiting a long time to get to our table.
Great place and would go again.

We had the tasting menu, which was a delicious series of very inventive and flavourful dishes. Dietary requirements were well catered for and the staff was extremely knowledgeable when we asked for more information (no «I will ask in the kitchen»). Wine by the bottle is on the pricey side, but carafes and glasses are reasonable. Highly recommended for a gastronomic experience in the area!

I would dine here weekly if I lived anywhere near Alkham. The décor is comfortable and inviting. The moment you walk in you have the feeling that you will have a wonderful experience. The service was the perfect mix of semi-​formal, friendly and attentive. The food was exactly what you want in fine dining. It was plated beautifully, had interesting flavor/​texture combinations and tasted delicious. I recommend the lobster and crab salad, the rabbit and the lovely cheese cart.
Attire: Business Casual to Dressy. I wore dress pants, a nice top and heels.

Having watched the Great British Menu, we decided to try out the restaurant run by Charlie Lakin.
It has a beautiful dining room, not too crowded but with a very good atmosphere.
We had the rabbit (with douglas fir) and the pigs trotters to start. We loved the pigs trotters, they came with fried quails eggs and were delicious. The rabbit was very interesting and came both as a pâté and smoked.
We both had the beef, which was superb. It fell apart and was tasty and tender. The vegetables were cooked to perfection, with a gorgeous wild garlic mash and some of the best mushrooms I have ever tasted. The cheese board looked amazing, and they were kind enough to let us sample a piece of Lancashire Bomb cheddar, which was superb!
It was a very busy (Thursday) night and the staff were obviously kept pretty occupied, but they still managed to be attentive (they noticed that our table wobbled and fixed it immediately) and very knowledgable. Would definitely go back!

I’ve been putting this one off as it’s a bit out of the way for me. Still, its was Philip’s birthday and that wqas where he wanted to go so I grudgingly said we could — Philip doesn’t drive so I have THE POWER over him!
OK, I was wrong. It is a long time since I last made a ‘discovery’ in the East Kent area — thought I knew them all — but this is FABULOUS FOOD.
It was once a mere country pub with pub grub of reasonable quality. For those of you who like to go to a pub for a meal (as do I sometimes) this must disappoint — it is NOT a pub any more — though it does have a bar and I’m sure they would make you welcome if you just went in for a pint. This, however, is a seriously good resataurant — I mean SERIOUSLY!
The quality of food and the artistic presentation must make it a realistic candidate for a Michelin Star if they covet one. You will need to book but do yourself a favour and give it a try — you’ll be back again, I reckon!
