Average lunch… The service was average and the food even more average. It is a pity as the location next to the river is perfect. The venue is located perfectly however it is in need of renovation.

Looking for a lunch in Kingston with a great view and good food? Go go go… So then there were 3… After meeting my dear grandmother and asking her; what would you like to eat? Anything… Where would you like to eat? Anywhere… How hungry are you? Up to you…(She obviously wasn’t listening) my dad decided on the river… The competition Byron, slug and lettuce or browns. Browns had enough seating for outside lunching… Speedy service and a £12 lunch menu. Starter and mains… We recommend fish and chips with either the mushroom or pâté starter or the chicken breast with salmon starter. Really happy with browns… Will go again for sure and food and drinks, 3 people,(and tip) 50 quid(look, it was sunny who cares). Check out the pics… Good job guys

I went for afternoon tea here and was slightly disappointed. The price of the afternoon tea is very attractive but unfortunately the food was not so good. The sandwiches were rather dry, the scones had a funny taste like they had been left out in plastic containers and the desserts were clearly not fresh as the jam had gone a brown colour. I would stick to the normal menu!

What is it that restaurant staff find so difficult to manage nowadays? Don’t they recognise that they are in the service industry and that looking after customers is their priority? Today I endured a meal at Brown’s in Kingston-upon-Thames that typified what is wrong in catering in the UK today. Why are workmen fixing fittings during times when customers are in the premises? Why cannot this be managed before customers arrive? Why are staff so busy when the place is half empty that it takes more than five minutes to order a round of drinks? Why does it take more than 50-minutes for a simple food order to arrive? Why do I have to ask what the reason is for the delay? There is no excuse when enquiring why there is a delay to be told that a large previous party ordered just before you placed your order. An attentive manager would have noticed the delay and apologised for the service problems. Why do the kitchen staff then deliver food that is plainly inedible and which should have been consigned to the bins rather than given to waiting staff to deliver to your table? Do they think they can get away with serving poor food because so few others complain? When asking to see the manager I was told that they were busy in the office doing paper work. This is no place for a manager during peak hours. Their job is surely to make sure customers are taken care of and that their staff are doing their job. I did eventually see the manager who could only apologise for the service. There were offers of vouchers for future meals and much more that I politely declined. A manager should be on top of their job, directing staff, caring for customers and making sure quality service is delivered. If head office insists on the paperwork being completed at the expense of customer service they should be fired immediately.

Browns has evolved into a British institution; its Oxford branch is used by many parents to feed up their off-spring before setting them loose on the student world and its Covent Garden branch has occupied a spectacular old law court. However, having sampled its fare across the Country I can say the menu is consistent, but the execution erratic. Unfortunately, my experience of the Kingston branch is that it falls on the lower end of the spectrum: service okay & food okay. With the nearby alternatives it is not one to excite. So go in Edinburgh, avoid in Bath and only to Kingston if you’re in search of beige.
