Come here all the time during college, and I cant fault it; incredible food, staff and atmosphere.

Another member of the Pitza Cano family, Café Caldo sits opposite the Civil Engineering building of Leeds Uni. It really does not look like much from the outside, at all, but upon entry, it’s rarely busy and has space to sit and enjoy a good meal. They do bagettes and all manner of sarnies, as well as an absolutely bargainous decent fry up, around the £3−4 mark. I used to go occasionally on the walk to uni for a quick brekkie with a few mates. It’s cheaper than many other places offering similar stuff, and really does avoid the hoards and masses. Although, this may well be a negative for its business, I find it relaxing, and I know it’s much of the reason that regulars keep going back!

It doesn’t look much from the outside, but brave the neon signs and you’ll find that Café Caldo serves food to rival the posher places on Hyde Park Corner for about half the price. The bread comes thick and crusty, the fillings fresh and generous, and the drinks are of the smoothies and herbal tea variety, again for a price much lower than what you’d pay elsewhere. Because of its rather unglamorous location, Caldo seems so far to have avoided the swarming masses of students looking for a lunchtime bite or a hangover cure, but it can’t be that long until they discover it — make sure you get there first.

Caldo is a lovely little café wedged between the pubs and the takeaways opposite the university. Aimed at students who want more than what the union offers at lunchtime but do’t want a pub lunch or a flames, this place offers hearty baguettes with a bit of style(big crunchy sandwiches with fresh, largely vegetarian ingredients served with salad) for around £3. They also do funky herbal teas and freshly made juices and smoothies meaning that it can be a good place to go for a morning-after hangover remedy. Inside, it’s friendly and nicely arranged, and the staff are good people. Spot on.

Just been here for lunch. I’ve been walking past it every day for almost 4 years and I can’t believe what I’ve been missing out on. I got a large crusty baguette served on a plate with salad for £2.90. It was stuffed with feta, olives, humous and lettuce. Aboloutely fantastic. They also sell a good selection of teas including a lot of herbal Tazo teas. They sell coffee in various forms and also do simple hot food such as jacket potatoes. The smoothies and shakes also look fabulous. I’ll definitely be going back. Nice seating too!
