Fulton’s Foods by default most certainly has a place in the hearts of those who recognise that there are pros to buying frozen foods. Brown, bread covered chicken and fish(that would make ‘You Are What You Eat viewers’ tut) aside, there can be a real storage advantage in having a few packs of frozen veg in your freezer, particularly when you realise a lot of your fresh vegetables are not looking too healthy, whilst having a dinner party(I speak from experience). Fultons is an alternative to the gut-wrenchingly terrible repellent force that rival freezer chain Iceland has bestowed on the nation. I have few qualms of walking into Fultons and browsing the very reasonable deals, especially as I know there will be no chance of bumping into an all singing, all dancing crew fronted by Coleen Nolan and Jason Donovan. Fulton’s is by no means an aethetically pleasing shopping trip, nor is it by any standards a true ‘foodie’s’ dream, but it does exactly what you’d expect: sells frozen food. Fulton’s has a mix of both packeted dry goods, such as condiments, crisps and tinned goods, but also a great selection of frozen veg for a fraction of the price of any larger supermarket. It is a perfectly reasonable pace to go if you are trying to eat on the cheap. I am more enclined to buy fresh ingredients, but for those who are not bothered so much, try out Fulton’s — your pocket might thank you.

Although I’m not a fan of frozen foods at all, I do agree with Aniela that’s it’s an advantage to pack the freezer with a few bags of frozen veg. I find that when I buy fresh veg, it goes off very quickly and I end up having to waste bits of it. Frozen is good in that aspect, take what you need and seal the bag back up for another day… ta-da! Frozen peas are perfect for throwing into a stir fry and even the odd frozen breaded chicken doesn’t go amiss when you feel too tired to cook properly. Cheap…not so much cheerful. Good for students.

Ah, to be a student again and able to survive three weeks on a pack of frozen fish fingers and a tin of beans. I don’t know if I was simply less hungry then, or if I’m just really greedy now, but the appeal of filling up my freezer with boxes upon boxes of indeterminate solids of little nutritional value has lost some of its appeal — I quite like my food to look like it was picked within the last month these days. That said, places like Fulton Foods will always be a godsend to some people. They stock branded frozen and chilled foods at ridiculously low prices that always keeps a steady stream of people flowing through the door. As is often the case with budget stores they’ve spent little on the shop itself, and shopping there could never be described as a pleasant experience, but then it’s not exactly the kind of place you come to browse through continental cheeses. I’m always a little concerned by how many shoppers seem to purchase nothing but chips and potato waffles, but for all I know they’re having a chip and waffle party, and I should probably take my Jamie Oliver inspired judgement elsewhere…
