A great tradition chippy! I was surprised by another reviewer’s comments, the staff are always friendly and seem to know a lot of their customers. I used to be a Bryan’s customer but when it changed hands and the portions got smaller I looked elsewhere. It’s nice dealing with experienced staff who don’t need«twice and a portion of peas» explaining to them. The food is just as good as described below and I can recommend the fish butty.

Isn’t it amazing how one food can vary so much, I’ve had fish and chips that tasted of chemicals, soggy batter, over and under done chips… the list could go on and on. When I tried Kirby’s I was initially unimpressed by the rather sullen faces of the staff(it was busy but a smile is not time consuming) and I actually felt like walking back out and heading for one of the other eateries nearby but you know how it is when you get the scent of F&C so I waited in line. I have to say it was worth the wait, The portion size was just right, the fish was tasty and coated with a crisp batter and the chips were how chips should be(and rarely are) with a crisp shell around a fluffy centre. Kirby’s does seem to be one of the better F&C shops around Leeds, surely that’s worth smiling about!

This large fish and chip shop on the main road through Meanwood is packed with people often spewing out onto the street to get the famous chips. The reason this place is noteworthy is not just because they are damn fine chips and hefty portions but also because they still cook in good ol’ beef dripping so you’re getting traditionally cooked chips with local stamp of approval. If this is your cup of tea then head out of town and grab a quick bite

Kirby’s is probably the best place to get fish and chips on Stonegate Road… but this isn’t saying too much as it’s really the only place to get them. The surrounding takeaway are all much more late-night focused, and do their business mainly when the drunkards pour out of the surrounding pubs. Kirbys is a rather budget chippy that does its deeds through the day rather than at night. It’s cheap and it’s definitely cheerful, but it doesn’t have a unique selling point, and for me it falls into the ‘nice but not great’ category of fish and chips shops.
