The Londis on Woodhouse St looks a little run down, but don’t let that put you off. When traipsing back from the doctors and in serious need of a jacket potato, beans, and cheese I decided to head in. The shop is quite big with all your usual tins, cans, juices, fruit, veg, biscuits, cheese, milk, and papers. But they also have a Post Office at the back, a shelf of childrens toys AND a vast selection of booze. The alcohol selection here is much more fruitful than your usual Grocery or Newsagent. The lady behind the counter was very kind and helpful when I asked for directions, finishing her elaborate hand movements with«You take care love» in that always comforting Northern accent.

While I try and steer away from reviewing chain establishments, preferring instead to write about independent retailers that are unique to Leeds, this Londis just has to be mentioned as it’s unlike any other Londis I’ve ever visited in my life. While the majority of the shop is the same — limited selection of fresh fruit and veg, tinned goods section, dairy section — the booze aisle just has to be seen to be believed. They claim to stock the widest selection of beers, ciders and spirits in Leeds, and I wouldn’t argue with them — they have over 10 different types of cider alone. There are some good local ales and also some more unusual continental lagers that I’d never heard of before. There are some offers on if you’re buying a lot, and although they don’t compete with what’s on offer at the supermarket they’re not really trying to. It’s not a place to stock up for a big party, but it’s perfect for popping in and picking up and something new to try. Personally I’m a big fan of the Cooper’s ale and the Old Rosie scrumpy — just don’t drink too much of the latter!
