There are so many takeaways in Leeds that aim at the drunken student market, but i’ve been hearing positive reviews about this place, so I had to go in here after an alcohol filled night out to see way the hype was all about. It’s safe to say these guys really are up there with the great takeaways in Leeds. My pizza was really nice. The right balance of pizza and cheese and ice huge slices too. Didn’t feel greasy like many pizzas you get in other places and was nice and soft. The way I like it! I’d come again!

My last Lucky’s experience didn’t have the usual magic, I’m sad to say. I mean, they’re still quite up there in the take away pizza royalty arena, but somehow the last pizza I gorged upon just didn’t slice it. For starters, I ordered via just eat, and being the indecisive type I wanted a half and half pizza. Within minutes of accepting my options, and order, they rang me to say I’d chosen an option that wasn’t available for the half and half –well, that wasn’t my fault — you gave me that option on the site! Seriously, take aways take note, only put up options that are actually available then we won’t have this kind of kerfuffle. No problem, I’m easy going. I went for the basic version of each option and that was fine. Cool. My pizza arrived in good time, piping hot and ready to be devoured. Awesome. But somehow, it just didn’t taste as good as usual –there wasn’t as much tomato sauce as usual and the cheese wasn’t as stringy? I don’t know, maybe I’m being picky, but the cheese just wasn’t as good as usual! In any case, it was by no means a bad pizza –they’re always massively generous with toppings, and always pretty reliable. Happy days. I’m sure I’ll order another pizza at some point, and I’m sure it’ll be awesome!

My pizza delivery place of choice. 18″ pizza for less than £9. Nuff said. or is that enough? probably not. Lucky’s gets my custom over the vast amount of competition for 2 reasons: 1, they have mastered the art of making cheap take-away style pizza that doesn’t have that über-fatty feel and taste that you get in other places. when delivered your pizza is hot and the cardboard is not soaked through with grease. Always a good sign. 2. Individual slices. whilst others have started doing this I think Lucky’s did it first. If I’m walking past and I’m hungry I know for a fact I can immediately get my hands on a massive slice of pizza for one shiny pound. a saviour on a long drunken walk home.

Lucky’s used to be my favourite of all favourite places to order my regular four cheese pizza from with the girls. The delivery was here within 15 – 20 mins of ordering, the order was always right, nice and hot and cheap. Perfecto! Luckys sells either in large pizzas or in single slices so if you don’t want to go the full mile and get the big daddy pizza, a slice can be sorted! Extremely popular for students(maybe due to the bombarding of flyers through halls), Lucky’s is a staple food in a lot of student diets!

I felt like I should be giving Lucky’s fewer stars than this, but when I started to think about the place, I realised its good points. I don’t use Lucky’s if I fancy a pizza to order in, and it’s not that I don’t like their pizzas, I just have other favourites that have over the years become my regular. They have a massive selection of pizzas(including dubious sounding gournet ones-including seafood, baked beans, and chocolate, not together I hasten to add), and they do have a distinctive taste, which I think is actually pretty important when I reflect on my favourite pizza places. I like Lucky’s due to the fact i am convinced they have saved my bacon a number of times. When intoxicated, heading into town often on an impromptu night out, without having had any dinner, Lucky’s is conveniently perched on the corner of a takeaway strip near the uni, en route. What seperates it from the other pizza joints is that it sells slices of it’s whopping 18″ pizza, for £1. So if you do not want to wait for your food, or you don’t want a full-on pizza, or to pay for one, just pop in and collect a slice!

Like its sister shop located further down the same street, Lucky’s is a massively popular pizza joint that does standard pizzas for standard prices but also offers something that hardly anywhere else(surprisingly) does — single slices. They’re a quid, which is fairly good value for those who are too scared to face a whole pizza(however, it’s better value to get a whole one and finish it off for breakfast if you have no shame like me) and they’re pretty tasty whether you’re sober or drunk(most people in here will be the latter). Sometimes, however, you get the last slice of a pizza that’s been sitting around for ages and has gone a little bit stale or soggy, and it’s not the most pleasant culinary experience. The service could also be a little bit quicker, but all in all they’re doing a good job.

Located on the holy grail of takeaway sites, where the Woodhouse bound leave Otley Road on their way home and residents of Headingley and Hyde Park look for sustenance for the long slug back, Lucky’s is by far and away the best place to grab some pizza at the end of a night out. Alongside the usual margherita and pepperoni toppings you can get some more unusual flavours, including baked beans(apparently known ‘commonly’ as ‘skinheads on a raft’), donner meat and dolcelatte cheese, the staff are cheery even at 2am — as long as you’re not an obnoxious drunk — and you can buy margherita by the slice for just a quid. And just in case you’re thinking of changing your loyalties, the 99p slices offered a few doors down aren’t nearly as good.

Lucky’s was always the pizza place of choice throughout university, and still remains a firm favourite thanks to their fast delivery, freephone number and mostly their tasty, inventive pizzas. My favourites are the Vegetarian Deluxe, the Celery and Blue Cheese, and the Pizza Pesto, although most people I know(ok, Steve) go for the Meat Feast or the Meatheads and Madcows. Ooh a good tip — if you can agree on a topping, share an 18 family size — it works out cheaper and it’s very exciting when the delivery man turns up. I feel like I’m in some kind of US sitcom/teen drama like Dawson’s OC or something.
