Stepping into a department store fills me with more excitement than most and the reason why is that its these department stores that are home to all the beautiful make up and beauty counters. I become almost giddy at the anticipation of searching for the next item to make it to my kit. I love meeting the people on these counters as their passion really shows when they assist you particularly when you have a common interest as I do. All this can not be said for the Mac counter within Harvey Nichols. The set up of this counter is idyllic and looks like the dressing table of dreams. The service in this place however does not match up to aesthetics. I had gone specifically to get a lipstick for a wedding I was doing and hoped that I would find a few treats for myself along the way. The counter was so busy and the queue was getting bigger and bigger. I could see that there was nobody serving at the till but instead partaking in makeover with individual clients. Many customers including myself asked if there were any other staff available to serve on the till or get the products for people(some of Macs products are kept in the drawers under the counter and only have testers on display). I was told that everyone was unavailable at the moment as the makeovers were taking priority. It wasnt until more and more people started putting products back and leaving the queue that one of the sales assistants reluctantly devided to come over and serve. You could tell that the sales assistant wasn’t very happy she had to come away from her client to serve as she tried to force a smile on her moody face. Your purchase was pretty much thrown in a bag and thrown at you in a rush to get you away from the counter. I completely understand the staff on Mac wanting to spend all their time doing the makeup side of things, as it is what they love and are passionate about and they want to be able pass their love for mac on to new clients. But what about all the people who already love Mac and just pop in because we know what we want as we buy it all the time. I don’t see why new customers should be more valued than the regulars. Not only is it unfair but its the perfect way to make your regulars stray to another brand, and that is exactly what I intend on doing.
