I’ve been getting my meat from here since I’ve been buying my own food(approx 16 years) — my Mum always went here for meat prior to moving to Ireland and they can’t be topped. I’m even able to ring and pre-order my meat in advance when I’m short on time however I do enjoy just dropping in for the friendly banter. The staff are lovely. nice honest boys who wouldn’t sell you just any old rubbish. Most of them have been there the whole time I remember using the place so evidently they are happy in their work. Its a shame the Meat row has declined in recent years as this place really does fly the flag for good honest Leeds quality produce. The new shop next door also does pies that are way too tasty for the usually slimming female!!! I would recommend this place to EVERYONE– if they don’t have the cut in that you want then they will certainly will get it in for your request(i’ve had beef skirt, ox tail, diced venison) and the prices for the quality you get here outweigh what is on offer in all the supermarkets. The sausages are lovely and juicy– not packed with cereal filler, and made on the premises frequently during the week The bacon doesn’t shrivel up or give off lots of water when it’s cooking The rump steak is superb and all the mince available is made there, by them, from good cuts of quality meat– not the scrag ends! Be proud to be from Leeds and get down to Leeds Market to buy from these lovely guys!

I love this place. I’ve lived in Leeds for 10 years, and this is simply the best butchers in town. Great quality predominantly local meat, cut by master butchers, and unique, personal and friendly customer service. The guys here will give you tips on getting the best out of cooking a particular cut, even teaching me how to stew goat when I looked curiously at the meat available — I followed their suggestions and it was delicious. They’re always busy, but they always find time to share tips and give advice, and always with a smile and a bit of friendly banter, and at very good prices. This is how shopping should be!

Man oh man on a row of Butcher’s stalls in an indoor market, there is definitely the metaphorical pec flexing. Malcolm Michaels stands out from the crowd in this seemingly impossible environment, flying two large Union Jacks(are we still allowed to call them Union Jacks, or do they have some politically correct name I am unaware of?) hanging above the store in true territory marked manner. It’s a good way of attracting attention, and when your attention is given, the smiley faced butchers will holler at you to come closer and sample their meat. Shouting offers out in to the general shopping public until someone’s ears prick and heads turn and a sale is made. Oh and if the flags didn’t give it away, British Beef folks… all the way. Usual cuts of meat, most locally sourced, but those that aren’t «are the best, love»…umm ok… meat packs, they work out pretty bargainous! Nice selection of multiple cuts, joints, varieties, all perfect for feeding a household for a week or so depending on your denomination, or now it’s no longer dark at 4pm everyone seems to yearning for Summer, and nicer weather and therefore barbeque and social gathering in the back yard season.

I would say I shop most frequently at Malcolm Michaels out of all of the shops on the infamous Butcher’s Row stretch in Leeds market. During my student days, we held many a Hyde Park barbecue and this was the ideal place to stock up on goodies. They sell kits in the more barbecue appropriate Summer months, comprising of already prepared items to place immediately on the grill. All year round, Malcolm Michaels sell packs of meat in £5, £10, £15, £20 and £30 denominations. They include sausages, pork, spare ribs, chops, chicken legs, mince and liver in increasing quantities. I have become quite the pro at buying one on a Monday and getting a couple of weeks worth of meals from it. It is all about economising the price without comprising on flavour. Good value for nice cuts of meat, whilst being served with friendly banter. Done.
