Well, it’s properly the weather for it, isn’t it? What does one do when one’s been gallivanting in Meanwood woods for a few hours, and has become parched from adventure and exploration on a sun-dappled jaunt? Stop off at the Myrtle, that’s what one does. And you couldn’t have a nicer wander to get there — even the houses along the road are quaint and gorgeous. Apparently all built back in the day for workers in the area, so do look out for the amazing cottage-looking-terraces en route. As you approach, the first thing that’s apparent is the humungous beer garden. You can sit close to the pub, if you wish, on the patio or take a tiny walk down to the amazing green. There’s plenty of benches to plonk on, or simply bring a picnic blanket and go right up to the beck’s edge. Alternatively, should there be a game on, take your pint up to the wall and watch some cricket. There’s tons of options in this kind of summer weather. We’d hoped to catch Sunday lunch, but being gone 5pm, and noticing everyone else had conceived of the same great idea, we missed out. Notice — do get in early if you want a bite. I did notice the feeling of walking into a ‘locals’ pub as we went in, with more than a few heads turning, but perhaps it was my imagination. No one was unfriendly, and the pub was rather jovial. As for options, I was too hungry to beer, so had a half of diet coke. Naturally, I’ll need to return to check out the range. However, it sounds like it’d be well worth your good selves doing so also, given how much seems to be going on these days — their Facebook page is abuzz with quizzes and all sorts, so do check them out! I shall be back to conquer Sunday roast meats, and a local ale.

So tried this place based on the dog friendly nature and the ease of access after an evening walk with a friendly friend’s dog in Meanwood Park. They don’t do food on an evening which I can only assume means it is only served on a weekend as when else would be a good time? It is a classic old mans English pub which is nice in a ‘classic’ way but a little strange in a ‘being stared at for not being a local’ way. I would def go back on a weekend post walk but can’t imagine I’ll be heading over on an evening again. I will Stress that everyone was very nice and the staff were fine it just wasn’t what I expected.

Ended up in here last week at a geocaching event and was pleasantly surprised! As Count Merlot comes caching with us, we thought that we should bring him along… yep no problems with dogs! WHOOP! I can see this being a stop off after a walk in Meanwood Park /The Hollies! The pub was taken over last year by a very nice chap that is clearly wanting to get rid of the previous image of the pub and has got real ales back in, is keeping a good cellar, has cleaned the place up(to be honest, i don’t know what it was like before, but it was pleasant inside when we visited) and is wanting to encourage anyone in… be it covered in mud from biking or with their dogs /kids. It’s a massive venue, but has smaller annexes if you want to get that snug feel. yep, I think the landlord will go far with his attitude, but might suffer just because of its location… it used to get everyone coming home off the ringroad. Anyway, shall try the food next time I’m in and report back.

Idyllically situated the pub overlooks a cricked green and behind the cricket club sits some well manicured allotments. The green is sparsely encapsulated with a few gritstone cottages and woodland. The land belonging to the pub is quite large. There is a small play area and picnic benches for a lazy summer’s day beer or two. Food is served from 12 to 2. Despite such wonderful prospects the pub isn’t too great, food quality good but the interior is in need of money and TLC. Hopefully someone will inject some spirit in it soon.
