This place always seemed to be closed when I passed but then I had a closer look and realized that’s because it was open really early for breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches and cups of tea. Being next to a builders merchants and a garage it caters for builders and mechanics rather than late-lunching students as I once was. This small but conveniently located sandwich shop/café does what you would expect — sell sandwiches and fry-ups. And tea. Without the ‘arty’ pretence of many other greasy-spoon venues in the area.

This was the perfect place to go with a hangover after a long night at the Victoria Works. Big greasy fry up with a cup of tea… perfect! It’s cheap and doesn’t really care whether you like it or not. It is what it is and doesn’t try to impress. Full of workmen at all times ordering a ton of food, it’s always pretty busy. It’s not hard to see why.

Next to Milford’s Merchants, this little café is a proper builders café serving up no-fuss food without fannying around trying to be something it’s not. It caters for its surroundings offering up butties and builders tea and it’s all good value for money. If it’s a proper greasey spoon you’re after around the Hyde Park/Burley area, look no further than Sharen’s Den.
