Living in a new area, it’s difficult, being awake, intoxicated and famished at 3am on a Saturday night, without your usual ‘trust ol’ takeaway’ being near enough to lend you a helping hand. Riffling through pizza flyers is a tricky job, but I eventually settled for Sicily’s in Kirkstall as my port of call. I called them up, and they were quite abbrupt with me, barely asking for my address for delivery(they were clearly quite busy dealing with the weekend rush)! I soon realised that my pizza had taken over an hour to arrive, and rang them to see if it was actually coming. The man on the end of the phone said yes, he’s round the corner. Another 20 minutes passed and I was then rang by the delivery man, lo’and behold, asking for my address. He was lost. He eventually made it to my door. The pizza was still somehow piping hot, which was a pro. However, despite the pizza being reasonably priced, at around the £4 mark, I would never pay that much for what I was presented with ever again. Aware that their sizes were slightly under-par at just 10.5 inches, the pizza was overdone and somehow, incredibly greasy. I’m not picky with food when it comes to 3am in the morning, but I hope I just caught them at a bad moment…

Brighter, cheerier and altogether a bit classier looking than your average takeaway, there are no surprises on Sicily’s menu but it’s still a more pleasant place to sit and wait for your pizza than many of its contemporaries. Prices are about average, ranging from £4 for a margherita to £6 for a king prawn special, and although the pizzas are inexplicably sized at 10.5″ rather than the more common 11″ the toppings make up for it in generosity. The bases are good too, staying light and crispy even with a heavy coating of cheese. With a better choice of toppings this pizza takeaway could go from good to great, but as it stands it’s probably just the best bet for pizza on Kirkstall Road.
