There is nothing one would need more after a hard afternoon strolling up and down New Road Street. Stocking a large and varied selection of wines with rotating offers to get you handing over that little bit more. Beers and spirits too open at exceptionally helpful hours to refresh the local community and pop in for a bottle of wine, settle in for the night and curl up under the haze of a bottle of red.

I have to admit I find something slightly unnerving about an off-license that’s located next to a children’s shop and uses a swirly, juvenile font to advertise its wares. It feels a bit like Baby’s First Booze Shop, and I half expect it to stock starter packs of Special Brew and Bailey’s flavoured breast milk. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t, and aside from the disturbing choice of font this is a decent off-license, with the usual suspects of beer, wine and spirits and some decent special offers, particularly on wine. There’s a bit more choice than in your local Spar, most notably with the ciders, and generally prices are comparable to the nearby Tesco. If you’re having a party it’s probably better to go somewhere with better deals on crates and large orders, but if you just want a few drinks it’s worth having a look around.

I can’t say that I agree with the below review that Simply Drinks seems like a dingy, secretive place as do most off-licenses. The bright shop exterior looks ‘merry’ and inside the shop is full of light and extremely friendly and bubbly staff who have a good knowledge of their drinks. I often come here before a big party to buy our alcohol as the price is cheaper than the Tesco across the road and they have good deals on for 3 for £10 wine. And I don’t mean the kind of wine that tastes like paint stripper either! They sell alcohol, mixers, sweets and small snacks. Perfect for stocking up for a little get together.

It seems to be a pre-requisite of off-licences to be dingy, secretive places that let little light in, and Simply Drinks on New Road Side is no different. It’s somehow got something likeable about it, however, even if it is just the curly font the shop front uses to tell prospective customers that all they will find here is indeed simply drinks. The selection is pretty large inside — I last went in hoping to pick up some beers on the way to a pre-drinking session and was spoilt for choice. Wines, spirits and soft drinks are similarly in great supply, meaning that Simply Drinks delivers everything it promises. The prices are standard for an independent off-licence, but there should perhaps be more multi-buy deals on offer. Put simply(no pun intended), it’s a satisfactory off-license which will offer you almost anything you’re looking for.
