The Corn Exchange is worth a punt purely for the stunning venue, grand design and vibrant buzz but it also has a lot more to offer than that. One big pull is the flagship store of the Hidden Wardrobe. I love this boutique as it really attempts to break out new and unique fashion without compromising on quality. Independent fashion it is and I’m all for it. If you want a piece of jewellery that no-one else owns or some cutting edge clothes from up and coming designers then look no further. What’s more once the clothes have been sold that’s it. No mass produced products here, you really are buying into your own bit of creative dressing and won’t be seeing every other person on the Headrow in the same get up. As for price, well I don’t think it’s bad one little bit. I’m hooked on the Monkey and Elf range and you can pick up a dress for fifty quid and try halfing that and some if you bag a bargain in the sale. After all, you are buying into their ethos. That being support grass root designers and fly in the face of commercialism and mass productive. They also do house parties so grab a bottle of fizz or two, invite the girls around and sit back and relax in the comfort of your own home. Go have a gander and see for yourselves but if you really do want to stand out from the crowd then bring it all the way to the Hidden Wardrobe.

This shop radiates style. Already in the chic atmosphere of the Corn Exchange, The Hidden Wardrobe’s sophistication and originality more than matches its surroundings. The clothes seem to mainly consist of neutrals with splashes of colour throughout the shop. They seem to really experiment with textures of colour and varying hemlines. It is the perfect place to discover an outfit which will set you apart from a crowd. Although they aren’t show stopping, the garments are all really interesting pieces, the Monkey &ELF label is particularly intriguing. Dresses flaunting cowl and ruffle necks, and beautiful sweater dresses with batwing sleeves fill the space. There is also a range of bags, belts and various other accessories. The décor is understated, but elegant, just like the clothes. The woman who ran the shop was very pleasant, eager to answer any questions. If you’ve never visited The Hidden Wardrobe before, I would advise you to go and discover its creative, sumptuous contents immediately.

Lawdy Lawdy Lawdy, doth mine eyes deceive me, are more stores slowly but(fingers crossed) surely, making their way back into the loving bosom of the Corn Exchange? One certainly hopes so! Whilst many a boutique item fails to fall under the umbrella of ‘my thing’ I know plenty of people who’s thing this type of shop is, in addition to I have appreciation skills. I know when something’s beautifully crafted or not. When in with a friend who was pondering a purchase and vocalised she’d come back next week, as it would be either still here or sold and replaced, it was a new item, she could get it another time, a nice lady decided to put friend in her place. Apparently The Hidden Wardrobe features capsule collections or limited edition pieces of locally talented artists and designers and they are then put on display for sale to the lovely public of Leeds to enjoy. It all seems quirky and stylish without being poe faced pretentious, and it’s good to support local stuff and look good doing it.

The Hidden Wardrobe showcases the collections of independent designers in this minimalistic boutique. Most of the clothes are GORGEOUS, really inventive, quirky, and cool. Think draping, unusual shapes, cool prints, assymmetry… but not too pretentious! Most pieces are completely unique and would make a great gift. Prices are reasonable, expecially considering these are small up-and-coming designers and you would be buying something unique that you wouldn’t find in a high street chain store. I saw a skirt I absolutely LOVE priced at £50, a top for £45 and a coat for £95. They also have regular sale items so you could find a bargain! If you have unusual taste and shudder at the thought or another high street chain store you may well love this place! Check out the website for more info and products.
