The small black girl behind the bar completely ignored me as I waited to be served, then she served the first person who walked up next to me. Worst service possibly ever. Avoid. If I could give this place less than 1 star I would.

Came here to check out the re-furb. Other than the decking out front and the extra pool table cant see whats changed! Still overpriced, still no atmosphere. Very over rated.

Suburban Style Bar has had a bit of a make over recently, and indeed sports a brand new name(which escapes me, so I’ll update later), and I must say it’s looking rather swanky nowadays. With a newly decked outdoor area it’s definitely on the list of funky spots to enjoy a drink in the remainder of the sunshine. I popped back over recently to take part in the open mic night, which is on a Tuesday, and although it was rather empty I had a lovely time. As there’s not always a lot of folk around you can enjoy having a bit of a sing as if you were in your own living room(your own rather shiny and posh living room) and so it’s a great night for anyone who are on the shy end of the performance scale. The staff were lovely and although it’s, strictly speaking, not really my kind of place I didn’t feel awkward and enjoyed having a few drinks here. I’ve not yet tried the food but the menu looks promising too! I will say that the prices are creeping up, a bottle of Corona came in at about £3.30, which is a touch steep in my opinion, but you’ll have your pick of the cosy booths. The focus is more on the cocktail scale, so it’s perhaps not a beer-drinker’s haven, but either way it’s a nice enough spot to kick off the night out.

A place that has the prices that this place does is quite fantastic throw in a bartender that doesnt get upset when you make your shots is always a winning combo. My american friend and I finished our chapel allerton run here and this is where we caught our drunkness in full form. They also do free pool at night time so it was laidback and free pool with jagerbombs for 2 for 5 pounds.

What the hell? Who takes a gorgeous sandstone building and covers it in tat? Are they even allowed to do that? Is it listed or something? We need to find out. So it’s called Suburban Style Bar, I expected it to be full of the über pretentious crowd, much more so than The Mustard Pot, but this was actually not the case. And whilst the people who frequent the SSB are trendy, young, folk who have an appreciation for glitzy venues with fabulously plush upholstery and furnishings. The cocktails menu is vast and should please the very many tastes and preferences of the consumer, although I could cringe just thinking about how they are described, whilst some are given the bog standard descriptions, others are, well tastless. Yet at between £4.25 and £4.75 for cocktails, £12 for pitchers and an average of £2.25 for shooters, the alcohol is reasonably priced for the area and actual alcohol content. Moving later into the evening, the bar area, and any other area gets absolutely rammed. It’s more of a fight to the bar than an orderly queue, and the staff seem to strain under the pressure at times. That said it’s good for a few social drinks before heading off into the main bars and clubs strip in the city centre.

What’s in a name? Quite a lot I say. Especially as mine derives from the Greek meaning bee. Quite ironic for someone who hates the little blighters. Well as a name goes I’m not too keen on anywhere that has to call themselves a style bar. However, I will make an exception in this case. Situated in the middle of Coolsville or also known as Chapel Allerton, this impressive looking building is decked out in contemporary furnishings and goes for the ultra hip and modern vibe. It’s nice too and looks the part. Now let’s get down to business. Booze! This is after all why I frequent the majority of places in my life. Maybe not the doctors or gym though! Well no grumbles on this front. If you want cocktails, go forth and feel the love. There are quite simply loads of them for you to work your way through. Classics such as a Bloody Mary and Daiquiris right along to the baby cocktails and creamy concoctions. Plus the price isn’t going to scare you off too. Very reasonable they are but I guess that’s what you get for daring to explore outside the heart of the city. Finally, the bistro serves up some good grub too so you have something to line that stomach before a night of over indulgence.

The signs on this place really do destroy the road, Upon first seeing it, I suspect I suddenly realised how some neighbours might feel when they react to excessively garish Christmas lights, not to mention that it destroys the view from the Mustard Pot! Upon entry, Suburban Style Bar is a lot bigger than expected. With Sky Sports on every plasma TV scattered around the place, the walls are covered in music memorabilia, including a full war montage of Elvis’s face. There are pool tables, and it has a bistro section for reasonably priced food. It has all the makings of a fairly decent bar, but somehow, and I suspect it might have something to do with its tacky exterior, it just doesn’t do it for me. It may well be an OK place to go before heading off into town, but I don;t feel it a worthy competitor for my affections if I were to choose from all the bars littering the area, in fact I would go as far to say that I feel it to be the desperate cousin, trying shamelessly to get my attention from the side. God, those lights.

If you can get past this venue’s name, which conjures up images of drunken Stepford wives comparing doilies over a crème de menthe, and its exterior, which spoils a beautiful sandstone building with an overload of unsightly, excessively modern signs, Suburban Style Bar is an OK place to grab a drink or a bite to eat. Their cocktails are pretty cheap for this part of town, with a long menu including classics like bellinis(obviously not real Champagne at £4.25 a pop, but tasty nonetheless) and a choice of well-priced shooters that seem to do well with groups having a few drinks before heading into town. The food is fairly average but good value, and the bistro part is separate enough from the bar to create a different, more relaxed atmosphere. Not one to make a special trip for, but if you live in the area it’s a good spot for midweek dinner or pre-drinks on your way elsewhere.
