Very disappointed with my visit to West End House today. My partner and I bought our lunch and were just thinking about getting a desert when one of the barmaids came over and told us we had to move as she needed the table. She did not ask if we were finished or if we wanted anything else. Just after we moved she cleared two sets of knives and forks away from a different table opposite the bar, so the table we were moved from clearly wasn’t needed. Needless to say we left straight away and will not be going back again. Very disappointed!

The thing I love most about the Unilocal quiz team is that we’re trying various places, and just every so often, we visit somewhere I’ve not been to. How have I not seen this gorgeous pub in Kirkstall before? Granted, I don’t live here, but I’ve friends that do and somehow assumed there were no local drinking spots. How wrong I was. Meet West End House, a beautiful sandy brick structure, that is cosy and welcoming once you’re inside. We’re talking classic pub vibe, and whilst it’s not too large, it manages to feel both spacious and snug at the same time. Behind the bar is the restaurant style area, and at the front there are various little tables to sit and socialise. They’ve a number of ales on tap, and some flat ciders too –which my companion rather enjoyed — and a fair old number of lagers too. I got on the Hoegarden, which was ace as I’ve not drunk that since Uni, but you can always grab a fairly decent bottle or spirit mixer should you want to avoid pints. Considering it was a Tuesday, the pub was virtually full of happy faces, some having just finished dinner, and some clearly there for the same reason as us –quiz. The quiz is pretty swift, but lots of fun, with a picture round, general knowledge, current affairs and a section where the answers are linked. Even though there wasn’t much discussion time between answers, I enjoyed the pace, as I’m like to dither over these things for ages. At the end there’s a ‘countdown’ style countdown to finalise any answers-I loved this. And, to round off the whole experience, you get to Play Your Cards Right, for a pound a sheet.(You get a sheet of raffle numbers, picked at random, and then play if your number comes up!) We got two rounds in and sadly lost both, but it was totally exciting. I insist that you go and try it out, it was fantastic! The staff are lovely too, very friendly, and accommodating –perfect for a pub that’s spot on. Love it. I’ll be telling my Kirkstall friends to give them a go!

Decided to take my family there for lunch when they came to visit in August, but didn’t get round to the review till now The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and they were also concerned that our table might be too near the big-screen football and offered to move us if so. Service couldn’t be faulted. Our meals came relatively quickly, and the food was delicious with very generous portions. Very reasonably priced too. All in all an excellent experience, we will certainly go there again and I can heartily recommend it. 5 stars !

This is officially my local now, its not bad at all. you vet a good mix of younger and older folk in there, and theres a decent selection of drinks, including my fave-Old Rosie! Oh and the food is good too, with nice big portions. My only actual gripe is that its a bit pricey for a local, but i can live with that.

Since moving into Kirkstall for University, me and my friends have gone to this place for the last three Sunday’s for our lunch and the food is amazing. My personal favourite is the half stuffed roast chicken wrapped in bacon and sausage with all the veg including butter-basted cabbage — It’s beautiful!

Some pubs are more adept at providing an eating environment than a drinking environment, which is seemingly the case with the West End House in Kirkstall. The bar area gets sort of eclipsed by tables of people enjoying the food, which is unsurprising due to the quality of it. Unlike the frozen-microwaved fare that most pubs settle for nowadays, the food here is rustic, hearty and exactly what a pub should offer. It’s slightly more expensive than most pub-grub but it’s much, much better so this is unimportant. But, it is a pub after all, and perhaps it should be more accommodating to those who wish to drink, rather than those who want to eat. Unfortunately, the drinking area is small, and the beers, like the atmosphere, are often flat.

This is the closest pub to my house but somehow I’ve only been in a few times. I think it’s because I miss the hustle and bustle of Headingley, and always feel like I might be missing a better time somewhere else Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with the West End. It’s pleasantly decorated, small enough to be cosy but big enough that you’re not too cramped, and the staff are friendly. There’s a rather ‘bijou’(ok teeny) beer garden but it’s handy for smokers. It’s also technologically advanced as it has wireless internet access so you can Qype on the go :) Great food, although a little on the pricey side — it’s not your usual microwaved rubbish though, so worth a go. I’ve noticed that the music tends to be a bit loud though so that’s why I’ve knocked a star off.

If you like giant portions of really good pub food then the West End is the place to go. They have a fanastic menu and always 3 or 4 specials on too. There’s sandwiches potatoes and salads at lunch time as well as good hearty choice like steak and ale pie, fish pie and lamb shank. Sunday’s they do a brilliant roast and they also do a Sunday deal where you can have a roast, a starter and a pudding for £9. But prepare to be really full though It gets really busy on a Sunday so book if you are a large group. If you’re looking for somewhere to go for a Christmas meal, the Christmas menu looks really good. We have just booked 2 courses for £9.95 but they also do 3 courses, coffee and mints for £13.95. Bargain!!!
