Elizabeth. W. just enjoyed a happy pre Christmas family meal, great food, and very generous servings. All the family from old to young enjoyed themselves in relaxed setting. If you want a family reunion this is the place. Staff friendly and patient with the large group of twenty. We had a large table in the conservatory, which was perfect for a large group.

As a pub to stop off at after a long walk over the South Downs for a pint and a light lunch, this would score fours stars. For a evening meal, two stars. I have experienced both, hence a slightly average three star review… As others have mentioned, this is a beautiful traditional pub with crocked walls, wonky ceilings and lots of dark wood. It’s situated in the beautiful village of Kingston, nestled right at the bottom of the Downs. It is your typical British country pub. As well as a bar and restaurant area inside, there is plenty of outdoor seating and a small playground around the back to keep the kiddies entertained. They are a Shepherd Neame pub so have all the typical ales plus a good selection of wines available by the glass. The food menu is pretty standard, but they do have a very extensive daily specials list with plenty of fresh fish dishes. I went for the chicken and chorizo skewers to starts, unfortunately the meat was quite dry but the Thai chili sauce served as an accompaniment was very tasty(although probably out of a bottle). For main course I had the dressed crab served with salad, bread and new potatoes, which to be quite honest was completely tasteless. The crab didn’t appear to be that fresh, the salad needed a dressing(iceberg lettuce, really, can you not come up with something a little more exciting??), and the bread was one of those mass produced part-bake things you can pick up in any cheap supermarket. So disappointing. My friend seemed to fair better with her red snapper which she said was tasty. They redeemed themselves with the dessert menu. Although some were clearly bought in, it did feature a homemade banoffee pie and a lemon and lime ginger tart. Both were delicious and left us both needing to undo the top button on our jeans! I would definitely visit again, but maybe not for the evening menu.

The slightly humorously named ‘The Juggs’ is the local pub in the small village of Kingston, just outside Lewes. It’s located in an old oak beamed building, the kind where you have to stoop to get in the front door. Although they don’t have a grassy garden, they do have a reasonably sized outdoor space, and an ‘outdoor-indoor’ space with a roof and outdoor heating, good for smokers in the winter! There are an unusually high occurrence of free houses in the Sussex area, so the fact that this is a Shepherd Neame pub actually makes it stand out — not necessarily in a good way, but it means that unlike a lot of local pubs the ales on tap are Shepherd Neame instead of the standard Harveys. The bartender was a bit frowny when I went, and the food fairly average. The breaded calamari strips that I had were OK, they could have done with a bit more seasoning, but at least the menu is fairly extensive, with quite a few veggie options. If The Juggs was my local I would be reasonably satisfied with it, although I wouldn’t necessarily make the trip out again especially to visit it.

Beautiful pub in a fantastic and picturesque location. There’s a really nice walk near there to take the dogs for a wander so its nice to be able to relax in a lovely beer garden like this afterwards. It gets really busy with ramblers and cyclists but the atmosphere is really nice and happy. The staff are dead friendly and chatty. They serve a really nice pint of Harvey’s in here and usually have the odd guest beer on the go. I had a fantastic roast beef for lunch, it didn’t cost the earth and was so tender and juicy. Do beware though, you may have a bit of a wait on a sunny weekend day but I promise its worth every minute!

This is one of my favourite pubs in this area. I love the village of Kingston. If you just walk up the Street where the Juggs pub is — you eventually come to the end of the road and to a footpath taking you up to the Downs — a great walk. Maybe better to do it so you finish the walk at the Juggs pub! The Juggs serves good real ale including Harveys and pub food which is slightly pricey but very good. For families there is also the village green behind the pub with swings and slides for the kids.

This place is really popular for food in the evenings. The food is really good, and there is a really good choice, from traditional pub grub to things that are a bit fancier. Its fairly expensive to eat here though. The mains are about £11 on average. There are a lot of places nearby where you could get the same quality cheaper. The pub has a really nice atmosphere though, and has lots of lovely exposed wood. A nice cosy place to have a glass of wine in the evening.
