I’ve only been living in Lichfield for 3 years but this is already a favourite haunt :-) The atmosphere is very relaxed and intimate even when the place is full. The food is always hot and tasty and the staff are incredibly friendly. It is a great place for pre-theatre drinks too.

The big sofas in Couch are one of my favourite places in the world. The staff are super-friendly, the newspapers are always available and the ‘naughty hot-chocolate’ is always delicious. Food is nice too. They’ve got a couple of lovely pasta meals on the menu, and they do a great sausage sandwich. Nice beers and wines available too. Only downsides are the LCD screens on the walls(a fairly recent install) that constantly show something called Style TV, and the fact that the whole place can be hired for private parties(great if it’s your party, not great if there’s a sign on the door saying closed from 5pm).

The Couch Potato is my regular haunt in Lichfield, due to its warm interior, cosy ambience and great service. Unlike many British bars you often get one of the staff coming over asking if you’d like another drink, and this is a refreshing change. If you want to chill, you’ll love the deep and comfortable sofas at the front of the bar, and it’s great if you just want to relax with coffee etc, whilst having a meetup with friends etc. The Couch Potato is adjacent to the Garrick Theatre, so it’s a great place to head into before a show, or otherwise retreat to afterwards for a night cap. The downside — no bitter on draft, and bottled alternatives are very expensive in comparison. Real Ale fans, I’m one, could head elsewhere, as there are many pubs in Lichfield with excellent real ale. Overall, warm, stylish friendly with great service.

Lichfield is pretty tranquil by day but has become increasingly feral at night. Which might be your thing, but if you’re of a certain age then smoke machines and 2 for 1 on shots no longer has quite the same appeal. So when I’m in Lichfield with friends we generally head to Couch potato which has a bit more of a laid back vibe, even on a saturday night. I haven’t tried the food which as you can imagine is quite carbohydrate based, but i would definitely recommend it for a more relaxed evening out
