The starter and main course were very good — trio of pates followed by an excellent sea bass with risotto. But the mit sorbet turned out to be a solid block of ice(I complained and it did not appear on the bill) and — although I like some time to chat after the meal as much as anyone — attracting a waitress’ attention to pay the bill took forty minutes. Overall good, but some attention to customer service would have helped.

It must have been in about 1980 when I first visited Thrales in the cathedral city of Lichfield. Nostalgia might be nudging me to recalling that it was a gourmet paradise then. Today(or, more accurately, last night) four of us had a perfectly enjoyable meal but it was not haute cuisine. The starters were filling and competent, but the presentation of the hors d’oeuvres for two was elaborate and contrived. Mains of halibut, sea bass, belly pork and steak pie were fine and the puddings were competent. Service was good, but a bill for £200 for four including two bottles of wine struck us as being a bit expensive
