The abbey of Kirkstead was founded in 1139 by Hugh Brito(otherwise Hugh son of Eudo), lord of Tattershall. Just a finger of building reaches high into the sky. I used to do something naughty and take a small stone from each abbey but when I picked one up here it felt really hot and I had to drop it. The surrounding land is covered in bumps and pieces of stone. Close by is the beautiful church of St Leonards Without. Outside the Abbey) a 13th century chapel. This was a church for the people and not for the abbey and therefore was not destroyed at the destruction of the abbey. It started out as a chapel for pilgrims outside the gates of the Cistercian Abbey at Kirkstead, and dates back to 123040. It is an excellent example of Early English style. Inside is an excellent knights tomb. Interesting to go and see.
