Templa
Rating des Ortes: 5 Stevenage, United Kingdom
The place on the map is very wrong I just gave up. It is by Stow Lincs. see my reviews of St Mary’s. St Edith’s Church, Cotes. Also known as Coates next to Stow. An amazing 12th century cnurch in the middle of nowhere really. I was on a field trip from uni when I discovered this and it is a gem. The building is late Norman but has like most churches of this age has alterations and additions up to the Georgian double bellcote. The church has a very low small Nave and Chancel. It contains a 15th century rood screen(the only one in Lincolnshire). The screen is very much Early English but restored by Pearson. Wonderful to see. There is a Jacobean family pew at the west end. Not a lot to be said about the other seating, just rough benches, oft times described as Rustic. The Royal coat of arms dates from 1635. There are brasses to William Butler and his wife. He died in 1590. There is a Demi figure of alabaster in a niche of Brian Cooke who died in 1653. There are small pieces of Stained Glass. Outside just south of the chancel there is the tomb of the Maltby family comprising an urn on a table with tapering columns as legs with a sarcophagus underneath. The place exhudes charm and peacefulness and is well worth a visit if in the area. combine it with Stow Minster just up the road.
