Devonshire House Hotel

I agree with other reviews. The hotel is worn, and badly in need of an update. The room I stayed in was also worn, ceiling tiles that were dirty, and with a non-​functioning wall lamp and bathroom ceiling light not working either. The mattress was uncomfortable, well used.
The restaurant food was so-​so. I got the ‘super vegetable’ burger: what emerged was a burnt veggie burger, cold bun and old soft and brown lettuce.
In the interests of karma I should say that the hotel basically gives you what you pay for, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. But there should be no reason the hotel itself can’t look a lot cleaner and more contemporary.

Stayed here on Easter Sunday tempted by the «late deal» that got us a double room for the night at £40. Can’t argue with that but the price list revealed that they normally charge £120 and that would be a real rip off!
The hotel has conference facilities and although the main building is lovely on the outside as the picture above shows, the interior is worn and a bit sad looking with ripped net curtains and peeling wallpaper and many other signs that it’s in desperate need of investment and care.
The hotel is on Edge Lane which is a rather sad approach to the city with hundreds of boarded up victorian houses awaiting demolition. One cab driver referred to the hotel as «the fleapit» but it’s not as bad as that. Breakfast (an extra £5 each) was generous but not of the highest quality. That said– £50 for bed and breakfast for 2 was reasonable and a fair price to pay for fairly unappealing conditions!

Although i have not stayed at this hotel i had a guided tour as my daughter was getting married and we went to look at it, can i just add that the picture you see here is very impressive but it does not look this this in reality, it is quite shabby and run down, and the interior needs a serious make-​over the carpets where something out of the 50s. although when you first go into the reception area it looks good giving you a false sense of security. The rooms are shabby and old. needless to say we did not book our wedding there.
