There are a few rooms to this pub but they all seemed to be completely devoid of anything approaching an atmosphere. Some pubs manage to have a feel. a presence even when relatively empty. Not this one. Parts looked quite nice. Serves all the Cains Beers. Went for their Blonde, which was just about average. Bit disappointed overall

Dropped into Dr Duncans with some old rugby-playing friends of 40+ years who meet weekly to enjoy real ale in various different Liverspool pubs. 2nd round was 7 pints of Cains FA definitely 0ff tasted and smelt of vinegar, so they were taken back to the bar with a polite request for an alternative beer. Bar staff not interested. Manager announced there was nothing wrong with the beer. Total lack of interest of the fact that 7 guys who had been drinking beer for over 40+ years were concered about the beer’s quality. It wasn’t as if we were after a a free pint all 7 of the returned glasses of «FA were full, less a sip! The way our request was dealt with was very poor. It was a take it or leave it approach. Needless to say, we all left for the nearby Crown & Mitre which is a GENUINE Real Ale Pub. Dr Duncan’s is Cains’ Flagship pub but the staff running it did not denonstrate much interest in customer satisfaction or competence in keeping a good beer cellar. Sorry Cain’s. Your beer is great but your front of house pub is not doing you any favours!

Doctor Duncans is a shrine to Cain’s Beer — that favourite beverage of Scousers everywhere. Unpretentious and homely, it’s a great place to go for a pint after work on a Friday night, and you’ll often it find it packed to the rafters with real ale buffs and jaded office workers alike at the end of a busy working week. There’s something wonderfully comforting about its existence, and I’ve spent many a happy evening here drinking numerous excellent pints of Raisin Beer and pontificating about everything and nothing at great length. The only thing that could possibly make this pub better is a better selection of food rather than just generic standard pub grub. However, if you’re looking for an authentic Liverpool pub experience, this is the place to go.

William Henry Duncan, the doctor and campaigner for health for the poverty-stricken from who the pub takes its name, was born on the same day as me, albeit well over a century and a half beforehand. This awesome fact is enough to make the pub great. The only other things that impressed me about it are its good old-fashioned interior, affable staff and a location out of the way of any undesirables. In short, it’s a safe four stars. Sitting on a stretch of road next to the gardens below St George’s Hall is both a pro and a con for the tavern. On the plus side, it is comfortingly relaxed and stepping out to see trees bedecked with fairy lights makes you feel like a holidaymaker. The only downside is the trek to other decent pubs.

Despite what you may think on seeing the interior, Doctor Duncans has not always been a pub yet it the original Victorian features of the building have been lovingly restored when converted just over 10 years ago. The beautifully detailed and well maintained tiles add a touch of class to this traditional boozer which acts as the Cain’s Brewery flag ship pub in the city centre. There are tons of award winning ales here all from Liverpool’s very own Cain’s company as well as plenty of guest beers — over 700 in the ast year apparently according to the Cain’s website. Being very close to Lime Street Station and within the same complex as the Mariott Hotel, DD’s is a good pub to make your first pub visit in the city and will make a good start to a night on the town as it is close to many of the other nightspots.

Doctor Duncan’s is one of the many pubs in Liverpool that has managed to maintain its original interior as well as it could. The interior is fantastic, which may explain the multitude of people that flock here in the evenings. It seems to be mainly used by business men on there way home after work or tourists who have taken a wrong turn out of Lime Street Station. Whilst the interior is certainly a big draw, it is more likely the great range of guest ales on offer that draw in the customers. Every time I go there are new ales on offer and if your an ale fan like I am then Doctor Duncan’s should definitely be part of any visit to Liverpool! However, be warned, the prices here are not the cheapest on offer in the city although they won’t break the bank!

Doctor Duncans has amazing interior décor — the tiled arches are awesome! It has a really local feel about it. I was there to meet friends mid afternoon and the pub was buzzing with lively chatter and background music. A well designed pub with a number of different drinking areas, plenty of space and generally pleasant surroundings. There is a small beer garden with three tables. Although the day I went it was a little to chilly to sit out in.

Doctor Duncans is a Cains pub specialising in ‘real ale’ — whatever that means. All I know is that its a proper good blokey pub and if you like cask ale or bitter, it’s even better! Overlooking St George’s Park and near to Lime Street Station, this pub is a little out of the way, but what some would call a hidden gem. It’s a good place to head for if you’ve been to either the Empire or Royal Court theatres, as it never seems to be horribly packed, and there’s a fair sized seating area too. The bar always struck me as quite high, but maybe that’s because I’m small. The furnishings are sparse in the back room and a bit better in the front, but don’t expect a comfy sofa in this place! Ideal as a stop-gap or if you’re early for your train.

Called in on a pub crawl. Excellent quality ale, very friendly, crowded on a Saturday tea-time in high summer. Cains tied house, and it provides perfect examples of their brews. Like the proper old-style bar.

I’m not a huge fan of city centre pubs but I’ll make an exception for Dr Duncans. It’s small, friendly and is one of the nicest pubs architecturally that you can go in. there is one bar but there are three or four rooms set around it. I wandered round for ten minutes just having a look at all the little nooks and crannies. Lovely fireplaces! The drinks were fine, had a glass or two of wine while I was there, and my husband loves it because they sell a variety of real ales and ciders. you’ll always find something unusual to drink in here. As an aside it was the door of Dr Duncans that they knocked on ib the Liverppool nativity!

I know most of the points have already been covered by other reviewers, but I felt it may be useful to have another view. This is my favourite Liverpool pub. Unknown in my early drinking days, it has come to prominence in the last few years, mainly because of the excellence of its real ale. Dr Duncans is regularly seen in various CAMRA publications and has won awards for the quality of the beer served here — a huge part of this has been due to the Cains beer always on tap. The Raisin Beer is to die for! I also like the no nonsense décor. Wooden floors can be good, if looked after like this. Another plus point is that, when you get an attack of the munchies, Tso’s is almost next door — an all-you-can-eat chinese at ridiculously low prices, then back into the Doc’s!

Dr Duncan’s is one of the most homely bars in Liverpool. I love the fact it has such old parts of it still preserved. It has a reasonably good selection of beers(and they are the recently troubled Cains too). Good atmosphere in a bar that doesn’t seem to attract much trouble, and where it isn’t too hard to get a seat always gets my vote.

Doctor Duncan’s is a famous Liverpool pub is close proximity to the stunning St George’s Hall, the pub is well thought of and usually features in the good beer guides published each year. When we visited the pub all of the beers were from the local Cains brewery, the lagers were disappointing and served flat, apparently the bitter was much better. The pub attracts visitors from all over the North West, mainly men and cask ale drinkers. The pub décor is traditional and reflects the style of the building. The pub is a must for anyone on the real ale trail in Liverpool.

I’m neither a drinker, nor a particular fan of pubs, but I like Doctor Duncan’s. It’s fairly large, and divided up into three or four rooms. If you go there during the day when it’s quiet, it’s easy to find a quiet corner to relax and chat with your friends. The prices seem reasonable for a town centre pub, and it’s usually clean, if unremarkable in terms of décor etc.
