Awesome place to grab a pint a burger and watch your favorite team play. Simple as that!

After visiting the Philharmonic and being very underwhelmed, I decided to grab a pint here as it looked interesting. It was a very solid choice. The place was busy, but not as cramped as the Phil. The bartenders were significantly more friendly, the beer choices were just as good if not better, and the prices were around the same if not slightly lower. The entire establishment was bright, clean, and welcoming with plenty of TVs(but not too many that it becomes overwhelming). The food I saw looked tasty as well. Much better choice!

Quite a posh looking pub(A hostelry of distinction!). Very busy but with a fair bit of space up front for some reason. The jolly barmaids were serving up a few beers, including Wapping Baker’s delight, which was not at all bad. Used to be a bakery apparently. Hence the name. Must have been quite a posh bakery!

This was exactly the type of bar I was looking for in Liverpool. A top selection of beers from Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and the rest of the world. I started off with a Budvar Dark on draught which was served in the proper glass and ice gold. I followed that with a pint of Erdinger Weissbier which was excellent. I noticed that for bottles of beer they had Chimay Red, White and Blue, Quilmes and Erdinger Dunkel and that was just a few. The service was very quick and polite and the atmosphere was lively as you would expect on a saturday night. You can expect to pay just under 4 pounds for a beer. Definitely a place to go if you enjoy finer beers. One issue I should point out was the state of the womans toilets. My girlfriend reported back that they were not clean or well maintained. Also the bar was quite hot although the staff did turn on some overhead fans to cool it down a bit. Those two issues keep it from being a 5 star for me.

The Fly in the Loaf is one of the finer-looking pubs around this area. Hell, compared to some of Hardman Street’s other establishments it comes across like the palace of Versailles. Hyperbole away! With its tiled floor, curved glass frontage and columns cloistering drinkers into groups, it always looks to me like the hotel lobby of some Moroccan hideaway, somewhere Hemingway would sit, recycling anecdotes about how he survived a plane crash or shot himself. With its high bar, higher prices and wide selection of continental beers, there’s something slightly snooty about the Fly in the Loaf, but it’s still a good place to sit and natter, like Nora Batty.

I was always put off eating in The Fly, mainly because, well it’s called The Fly in the Loaf. But, going with it, the food is pretty darn good, decent sarnies to go with a pint anyhoo! Although the main reason people come here is definitely for the humongous range of(rather expensive but you get what you pay for) real ales selection, rather than the scran. The only real downside to this place in my eyes is that it’s so blimmin’ dark in there you need a torch to find a seat! But I guess as the night draws on and the beer flows more freely, darkness added to blurriness doesn’t make much of an added difference.

This might well be the most expensive pub you ever visit in Liverpool, but it’ll certainly be worth it, even if it does feel like you’re climbing Ben Nevis every time you need to get to the loos. Stocked to the rafters with German and Belgian beers on draught(Erdinger, fruity ones, the whole shebang) and in bottle(Duvel, Chimay and the like), the best kind, this bar is on the site of an old bakery, hence the name. With a cosy ambience and quirky décor you’ll instantly feel at home. It can get very busy in the evenings as it’s such a popular place in a sought-after location and the food is exceptionally good, but there’s plenty of seating and lovely comfy sofas in front of the windows. With around four or five guest ales on tap and plenty of seasonal ranges this is definitely worth a visit or two, but be warned — if it becomes your local you might need to get a second job!

This is a cracking boozer. The Fly prides itself on a sort of no nonsense, real ale pub experience, so much so that I have seen the manager look on with utter disdain as a huge group of students in full pub golf regalia have dared to cross his doorstep, only for him to point straight to the door behind them and order them back out — it screamed for a ‘yer barred’ style statement but I think the man is too serious about the business of being a publican that he doesn’t do catchphrases. The Fly has a great array of draught and bottled beers from around the world and has a really good social atmosphere as you get a good cross section of ages and the bar staff are the type to make you feel like a regular. The building used to be bakery before becoming a bar in several different guises so I’m still not sure where the pulpit and gothic woodwork has come from?!

If they’d grown up in Liverpool instead of Sheffield, I’m sure Fly in the Loaf would be the Arctic Monkeys favourite pub. An old fashioned boozer with ornate windows, tiled floors and a high ceiling, it doesn’t appear to have changed in decades. There’s the same dark wooden furniture, the same carved gothic features and the same never ending bar that runs down one side of the building. The bar staff are fast and friendly and they sell everything from real ales, stouts and guinness to quality spirits. Remarkably for such a big space, Fly always seem to be packed with a lively mix of friendly locals, couples and friends having a quick drink before going home or heading on to somewhere else. In fact, if you look closely enough I’m sure you might even even spot dopplegangers of Arthur Seaton* blowing the last of their weekly wage packet on a quiet pint or three. *Arthur Seaton was the charismatic, anti-hero of cult, 1960s, kitchen sink drama, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning. His role was played by Albert Finney.

A typical old man’s pub that does well with youngsters too, this is somewhere for those who like their beer/ale and don’t mind paying for it. One of the only pubs in this end of town that actually abides by pub opening times and stops serving at 11pm, it can be a bit annoying if you’re meeting mates and they’ve already called last orders by the time you’ve got there. An alternative haunt for studenty types, you can find people huddled around tables in the day discussing the latest song they’ve written for their band, or the economic climate, or how they were convinced they’d never get through the first year of uni. The bar staff are friendly although come 11pm they practically run screaming from the bar. More of a stop-gap pub than anything else, this never features highly on peoples’ Saturday nights out.

This has got to be the place to go if you want genuine belgian & german beers. Costs an arm and a leg but well worth it. The ambience is cosy. The décor is original to say the least . Begs the question why the pulpit in an old bakery? Most of the bar staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the beers on offer. Only downside is the hike up kilimanjaro to get to the toilets and back down again. Not an easy feat when most of the beers on offer are over 8% in volume. If u like quality genuine beers in a cosy atmosphere then give this establishment a visit. It’s so good I’ve made it my local. Need to take out a second mortgage mind.

The Fly in the Loaf is a really great pub if you enjoy real ales. The pub is on the site of an old bakery, which is where the name comes from. Inside there is wooden décor, with a long bar, lots of seating and a couch tucked away in the little room in front of the window. They serve food, and although I’ve never eaten there I’ve heard that it is good. It’s owned by Okells so there is always some of their beer on tap(bitter regularly and then one of the seasonal beers as well). They normally have about 4 or 5 guest ales on tap which change regularly, and the bar staff are good at recommending which ones you might like. As well as these ales there is also Erdinger, some belgian beers(sometimes frambozen and de Koninck), carling, cider and others on tap, and lots of bottles of different beers(including duvel, chimay and many other Belgian beers). I’ve never found it to be too expensive, especially for the guest ales, but I suppose compared to some other local pubs it is a little more pricey.

A nice pub for a quiet drink, but is very expensive if you stay there a long time. If you are just out for a night out there are plenty more cheaper places down the same block of pubs. However, it is very good for premium beers and is set in very comfortable surroundings. I just wouldn’t spend too long there or you will certainly be going home with empty pockets!

The Fly in the Loaf is the most expensive pub I’ve been to in Liverpool. And I only got a coke! I think that attraction really is the extensive range of beers they serve. One of the biggest range in Liverpool. I’m not a beer drinker so this wasn’t really for me. The beers don’t come cheap though. If you get a normal beer, they are expensive. A kronenburg costs around £3.80. Cider and wine seems to be on the expensive side but not too bad. It is quite fancy inside so more of a young professionsals pub than for students.

A must visit if you enjoy real ale. The constantly changing selection is always well-kept and tasty and usually provides something for most tastes. The management are interested in what they are serving and it shows!

This pub is a large open plan pub/bar with a slightly western feel to it. Although the prices are a wee bit expensive and they always seem to have sport on, this bar is a great place to meet before you start on a night out.

The fly in the loaf offers the perfect pub experience although it is a little expensive. Situated on Hardman street and within a stones throw of other pubs and more classy bars. Set in a old, rustic building, it oozes character and charm. What the hidden and maybe unexplored positive of the pub though, is its excellent food, large portions and a superb sunday lunch. It offers a wide variety of beers, from carling to erdinger ! a great pub all round with the bonus of a few local scouse characters to amuse you.

This refurbished pub sits behind a fabulous traditional street façade of curved glass and dark wood. The woody theme continues inside, in the single large room, which also has a raised seating area, as well as a long, wooden bar counter. The pub, named after a bakery which used to occupy the site, serves a good rotating range of real ales, which seems to attract a wide range of punters, from students to 40-somethings. It can get very busy indeed on a Friday and Saturday, although it is usually a bit quieter towards the rear. It’s owned by Okell’s, the Manx brewery company.
