Good place. Friendly service. The drinks are good. We didn’t try the food. Apparently, this is not an oyster bar anymore. So, don’t expect much in the way of seafood if you come here. Good beers on draft and in bottles.

Being situated at the end of a passageway leading onto the St Nicholas’ church gardens give this pub a sense of historical involvement and to be honest, I was surprised it wasn’t as grimy and lived-in as I expected. I don’t know what the architectural version of Botox is but this place has had it in pints. This is a cosy, sub-ground-level pub with a penchant for seafood and humourously insulting banter. The furniture is all glossy and new, but what that loses it in lovable pub grottiness it makes up for in the fact it’s really rather pleasant. I imagine when the karaōke gets a-rocking the pub becomes nigh-on hellish but when I visited in the afternoon, I found it to be a tranquil spot of calm away from my role of pretending to be a high-flying lawyer.

This place has been around for donkeys years, this particular donkey is going on to a fair old age of around 140 years. If you have survived to this ripe old age pulling in the punters on a regular basis with a lot of repeat business. The pub doesn’t have its hands tied behind its back by any brewery and thus offer a great choice of ales. It serves good wholesome pub food which tastes great. The Gammon and Rump 8oz steaks both come with modest price tags both below £8. I also tried some of the fish and chips with mushy peas and am delighted to report back that it was very tasty indeed and it didn’t feel like I was drinking oil, which is a good sign. I can’t wait to go back and try the Galloway oysters. If you go to a pub in Liverpool make it this one, I say.

To have been around for so long Ma Boyles Oyster Bar & Restaurant must have got something right! Ma Boyles has daily specials such as home made fish cakes, lasangna, chilli scouse, pea & ham soup from £3.95 If you just want something small then I recommend the toasties if they are on the menu that day. There is a small area of outside seating. It you are unfortunate enough to go on a Friday night you will be subject to Karaōke. There is a free function room for your party.
