Old Post Office

First visit to this pub as it wasn’t one of my choices back in the 60’s and 70’s. Only went there today as the queue for coffee at M+S was more than half an hour!
A lovely little pub with wonderful staff and super value meals. Always worth asking about the daily specials as they are really good. The service was friendly and efficient for such a small pub in the city centre.
My main problem with it was that I wasn’t able to enjoy a beer. The choices were OK for those who drink fizzy keg beers, but no real ale at all. The coffee was as good as any pub’s is.

Get’s crowded very quickly which is expected for a city centre pub that’s small.
Loos aren’t spectacular and a bottle of wine is expensive.
staff are friendly though.

A bustling, murmuring corner pub, the Old Post Office has done quite well to emerge out of the Liverpool One renovations unscathed. It marks the spot where the begrimed publands south-​eastwards of Hanover Street give way to the glossy new shoppopolis. It also has a privet hedge running round the top of it for reasons I have yet to comprehend.
Inside, there are televisions barking out sports channels and enough drunkards to fill Wembley Stadium but the atmosphere is one of loud congeniality and the food looks impressive for the price it’s marked as. It’s just a shame I’d crammed my gut with meat elsewhere so ignore the fact I mentioned good food before. That’s not first-​hand opinion! Ignore it!

This pub does the most amazing steak dinners for around £7, or at least it used to when Quiggins was still on School Lane. Sadly, School Lane isn’t what it used to be, what with all the charm demolished by Liverpool One and all the tramps forced to pee and beg elsewhere.
I was told that various buildings in School Lane were listed, and The Old Post Office was one of them, meaning it couldn’t be demolished along with Quiggins. Which was great for little old steak-​lover me. It was never a particularly busy pub, what with being at the back of everything, but now with the new shops around it I hope business is booming.
Now, back to the steak. Served on a sizzling red hot metal platter, you need to leave it a while before you add any sauces, otherwise it will just dry up or disintegrate. I found this the hard way when I put a generous portion of mustard next to the steak, looked up to resume the conversation I was having, and when I next looked back, the mustard had reduced to a dry brown scab on my plate. However, the meat itself is cooked to perfection and as I’ve already mentioned, the price is right!
Apart from the steak, everything else is standard pub issue, with the faded old pictures of days gone by and typical wooden fittings and fixtures. Hopefully somewhere that will be serving steak for many more years to come.

This wouldn’t normally be my sort of pub, certainly not for a night out but the food is so ‘Value for money’. Please don’t get me wrong they serve good beer and have friendly staff but if it’s good food at reasonable prices then that is what they do best. The mixed grill is wonderful and everything is cooked to order, I’m sure that they will look after Veggies just as well so have a visit you may even return just like I keep doing.
