Well I went here last night for the pub quiz and i’ve got to say I was very impressed with the place given its exterior and the area that the pub is in! t seemed to be full of families and die hard pub quiz fanatics. The quiz began at 9pm and was 50p entry per team member. The prizes were £25 first prize and £15 second. The quiz lasted about 90 minutes with a 15 min break and marking taken into consideration, but was a great experience overall! The pub is huge inside with coz seating areas and plenty of local families catching up and gossiping, It seemed fairly respectable and the prices seemed very cheap, a round for 6 people costing just £14 when I was expecting to pay well over £20. Well worth popping in with a group of mates on a Monday night!

The Richmond Tavern lacks any kind of grottiness and as such, it’s difficult to feel truly at home here. I love me some grot. Sitting here, on the polished furniture next to the precarious ornaments, feels like when you used to visit a dull relative as a child, the one who wouldn’t let you touch anything and was dismayed if you asked for sweets. For the most part, the staff are friendly but if there’s anyone even slightly more regular than you at the bar, they’re going to get served first, even if they came half an hour later and don’t actually want a drink. I used to come here on Mondays to do the quizzes in what started as a jolly distraction but soon became a chore I felt compelled to push my way through. The turnout is often impressive but the clear downside of this is noticing that everybody else looks like the stereotypical Pub Quiz Team, with their muttonchops, pince-nez and giant, pulsing brains. Warm in colour and temperature, the Richmond Tavern is too bland to feel warm in soul.

The Richmond is not one of the most eye catching of establishments, it looks a bit Barrat Home in all fairness to it and inside there is little evidence of any more character. True you wont find the usual crowd who fill most of nearby Allerton Road’s café bars and restaurants which has to be a good thing for any sane person but at the same time you don’t want to feel as if you have been hearded towards the nearest leper colony either just because you don’t aspire to be a WAG or footballer. The Richmond is just really bland and this hits you as soon as you step inside of the beige and peach hell of its interior. It’s not the type of place I find relaxing for a beer because its almost as if you stumbled into a show home. The beers are cheap but then you can’t really expect to pay top dollar for a range of Carling, Tetley and Carlsberg. They do food as well and served all day but apart from the safe option of a Sunday Roast, the choice of paninis, bangers and mash or fish and chips are only what you would expect from a Wetherspoon’s style pub.

Although on the face of things The Richmond doesn’t seem to have anything special, I’m a big fan of the pub. It could be said that the Richmond seems to repel the audience that are so regularly attracted to the nearby Allerton Road and leaves you with a local, casual, and relaxed atmosphere. The menu is available all day with a variety of food ranging from light bites such as jacket potatoes and paninis to full blown meals. I would say the menu is not dissimilar from the typical Wetherspoons type menu — cheap and cheerful. One key point to The Richmond is that children are not allowed in at any point throughout the day — whilst this is a benefit to some people who want an afternoon away from screaming kids, it can also prove to be a downfall to families after a nice pub meal. Now onto the most important part of a pub — the drink! The bar has what you would expect from a typical pub, draught lagers, bitters and Guiness. It also offers a range of wines, alcopops, spirits and soft drinks. The prices aren’t bad at all, I got 3 pints of lager and a pint of Guiness for less than £10. Overall, a great place to meet up for drinks with friends, grab a bite to eat, or even have a chilled night out, however poor on the family front.

The Richmond is just on the outskirts of the Allerton area and as such, seems to attract all those who are vocally opposed to the high heeled brigade who tramp up and down Allerton Road. In the daytime it is bright and airy and has a fairly decent menu for somewhere that doesn’t consider itself to be a gastropub. In fact, it’s one of the only pubs that claims food is served all day(or until 9pm at least) and has successful themed nights like curry night on a Thursday. In the evening, it seems to be popular with people who work in the local area and have just knocked off, rather than people who live in the local area and have just spent 2 hours getting ready. A typical pub where you’re bound to bump into someone you know and you inevitably get stuck in the loos having a good old gossip with someone you only met 5 minutes ago. This is a nice place to socialise locally, and there tends to be a more mature crowd, although there isn’t a defined age range.
