Liking Belgian beer I ventured here on a Saturday night of treading Liverpool’s boards ! Firstly when you look in the bar fridges it solely says German beer(of which there are a selection) but realistically they are from all over. Luckily for me a good chunk of Belgian stuff hit the mark ! And at £4.00 a bottle I was not arguing ! The décor is one of and old ship(wooden creaky flooring and slat walls with big tables and pews ! Only thing that kept it from being a 5* review was the lack of comfort in a wooden bench and also no background music !

What a revelation! Can’t believe I’ve lived in Liverpool for as long as I have and only just discovered the delights of The Ship & Mitre! It’s a travesty! Went here with some friends last night for the quiz and the first thing that struck me was how huge it is — it’s like a tardis! The other thing was how busy it was — clearly there are plenty of people who HAVE realised how great this pub is! I’m not a real ale drinker but I was informed by one of my friends that the selection was excellent and that the pint she chose was delicious. The décor is fabulous — proper old style pub. Just lovely. The quiz was great too… but sadly by then we’d all imbibed more wine than is helpful with quiz prowess. But as they say it’s not the winning it’s the taking part that counts! Will most definitely be paying another visit to this fantastic place.

I didn’t spend long enough in this great little pub as I was awaiting my mates turning up(they were late! I could have stayed another hour!) but from the time I spent here it is clear that this is a gem of a pub. Lots of real ales well priced and very well kept, interesting and good value food menu, dart board, original internal features and friendly staff.

I live in the city centre and this is by far my favourite pub. Unreal choice of drinks and a great friendly atmosphere. Certain drinks can be a bit pricey but you will not find a better quality pint in the city.

This is a really special pub in Liverpool, i have never seen anything like it anywhere else. its paradise for beer lovers. it cost me £2.70 a pint for a guest ale last time i was there which i think is pretty good. the food is excellent too, i have had the scouse before and i would recommend it and the haddock and chips is very good too but i once had a burger there and that wasnt very nice. its not a pretty pub inside and they dont have music, wifi, big screen tv’s or anything. but what this pub does have is the ultimate beer selection.

Really good place — cannot get better than this! The drinks and atmosphere are excellent. Worth meeting friends there, or even a drink on the way home after a long day at the office.

Grumpy staff bring you good beer! There are loads of good beer choices at this pub and the food is well worth a nibble too. The pub looks like a pub should too. nothing modern, shiny or soulless. If for some reason you can’t find a beer on tap that you like, before you get your head tested treat yourself to something from the vast selection of foreign beers that they keep in their fridge! Cheer up! You’ve got a great pub!

Just to look at the place invites one in. And the selection of beers, ales, lagers and the fact that they can tell you about what they’ve got and will give you a sip to try it, hey, what’s not to like. Friendly crowd, it helps to know a bit about footie… Check it out, it’s a bit of old Liverpool, enjoy!

I visit the Ship quite regular and class it as my local even though I live some 2 miles away. The reason for this is that it is quite simply the best pub in Liverpool, if not the North West. The drinks range is extensive as stated in the other reviews. I enjoy the Belgian and German beers so this place is heaven for me. I also LOVE the Chilli and Coriander burgers. You can specify how hot you want it which is a bonus. The cajun fries are also a must. The only down side is that this pub is a victim of its own success at times. It gets very packed on Saturdays and during there regular beer festivals but during the week it is just fine.

After months of waiting, we finally got to return to sample the Burning Kitchen menu at the S&M. It’s another case where I wish Unilocal had half-star ratings because they deserve a bump from our initial four-star rating. I’m just not sure it reaches the five-star glory of the Five Guys burger in the States, though it is a hell of a lot more imaginative than Five Guys. God, Five Guys might have ruined me forever… Anyway, sadly, it has to officially remain at four, though it’s really four-and-a-half in our hearts. The drink: Kriek on tap, what else? The food: our vegetarian friend ordered the spicy bean burger, which she said was one of the best bean burgers she ever had. Lots of bean taste, not at all like the meat substitutes she’s often faced with. The fiancé had the basic cheeseburger with Brie. The interesting thing is that they don’t just put the cheese on top; rather, it’s stuffed into the meat. He approved heartily. I initially ordered the Greek-style lamb burger with feta and olives. A few minutes later, someone came over and explained that the chef had accidentally put Moroccan spice into the last of the lamb mince. I honestly didn’t mind at all, but they brought over some of the spice so I could smell it before I committed fully AND they offered to give me my money back. More than accommodating, especially since I was fine with switching my order and the Moroccan burger(with apricots inside!) wound up being very, very good indeed. Five stars for their willingness to go out of their way to make the customer happy. Oh, and the chips were aaaaaamazing. We’ll definitely return at some point, perhaps to take advantage of their lunch special of 2 meals/2 beers for £13. A hell of a deal, if you ask me.

Give them variety, lots of variety and they shall come. This must have been the motto when they set up shop the Ship & Mitre. I remember my first set of football boots, mitres they were and mighty pleased I was with them. Yes this place does serve real ale, not that I care much for it as I have mentioned on many occasions. What is real Ale anyway? Beer brewed from traditional ingredients and matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, then served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide??? Well I’ll be damned!!! Facinating, NOT!!! Hundreds of years ago on these green shores, we didn’t have clean water and thus it was safer to drink beer than H2O, and here we are still drinking«real ale» to this day? Tradition??? What tradition are we celebrating our poverty and scrubber ways from donkeys years ago??? Well Ikids and they just follow on this ain’t!!! Perhaps it reminds some of the older folks of their youth, perhaps they have passed on their«liking» for beer to their kids. Who knows, all I know is there is a reason beer is an «acquired taste». Because translated into real world equals, it tastes like poo, but if you drink it from an early age in copius amounts in a culture where it is cool to do so, you will eventually numb your taste buds enough and coax them into thinking that it actually tastes good. Viewers be warned this may take the good part of a couple of years. I have no time for«acquired tastes» life is too short. I try something and if I like it great if I don’t well it’s the first and last time I try it. Beer falls into the latter category, whether it’s CO2’d or not!!! Luckily this establishment has a great range of other beverages for people that are my way inclined. Cider for example, now that is the way forward. It has a kick and the sharp taste which reminds you of summer even in the midst of a cold wintery evening in a traditional drinkery next to a fire place. That is what a refreshing beverage is supposed to do, not make you feel bloated and smell like an old fart(as is the case with sir satan beer) The only beer that actually remotely taste any good in here is actually Czech beer, why that is I have no idea!!! Try it and find out for yourself. All in all I do like this place but only marginally. Why? Well you see I feel sea sick on ships, that coupled with my general fear of the sea and tsunamis means spending lots of time in a pub that is pretending to be a ship inside doesn’t really«float my boat». If you like to float however do step into the ship sometime, you«mitre» well like it!!!

The Ship & Mitre is high on the list of Liverpool’s real ale pubs and rightly so. Usually busy there’s always a decent atmosphere anytime of the week and a very good selection of ales that are regularly updated. Thursdays are also the night of the pub quiz and then this place really gets busy. My mates nan used to travel all the way over from Wallasey just to come to the Ship’s quiz night! These are a dedicated crowd and you won’t find many easy rounds. The food is not great but rightly so as it is just an accompaniment to the great beer.

The Ship and Mitre is a fantastic pub with one of the broadest selections of beers, lagers and ales that I’ve ever come across. They have several beer festivals a year and have 14 hand pumps and over 70 different bottled beers for sale on any given day. Not only this, but they have a great selection of pub food, including some dishes that you wouldn’t expect. For instance, you can sip a pint of Erdinger whilst enjoying a Bison burger or a Kangaroo burger, or my particular favourite, a lamb and apricot burger. The chefs are very obliging and chatty and cook free ‘Scouse’ every Wednesday around 5pm. Beware, get there early for the free grub because they run out fast and there’s often a queue. Aside from this the Ship and Mitre also have a function room upstairs, in which they occasionally put on events. I went to a stand up comedy night there in March and it was a great night out!

This is a Real Ale pub. There always seems to be a Real Ale Festival brewing in this place. It is mostly absolutely jam packed with quite a random set of customers, from business types to people who just like a decent pint. It’s always busy and there is a reason for this. It’s amazing. You might have to use your eagle-eye to hunt out a seat but once you have one you will not leave for a few hours, I promise. I discovered Strawberry beer here the other day, and I’m not a beer drinker at all, to be honest I just love the glasses they come in here(sorry state of affairs I know) but they have a round-bottomed glass that comes on a stand for a £10 deposit. They sell all sorts here, Cyder with a Y and everything, you won’t be disappointed. The food is pretty damn good as well, as a side to the monstrous amounts of cider and beer we put away we got the lightest crispiest battered onion rings ever. Check out the selection of burgers– especially the Greek style Lamb burger with olives. Mmm.

Hidden beneath an overpass in that weird, seemingly unwalkable area of town that appears to consist of nothing but traffic merging and thundering into the tunnel, you’d be forgiven for missing the Ship & Mitre. However, to do so would be at your own peril. The place is amazing. I’ve read countless reviews before in which people rave about a certain establishment for its ‘large selection of drinks’ but all this usually means is that they have a few alternating pumps. They have nothing on the Ship & Mitre, which boasts a drink selection so astronomically baffling that they’ve stuck up three menus to contain it all. The choice is staggering. Fancy something brewed by Trappist monks? You can here. Fancy drinking noxious cider that’s bred in some guy’s garage in Somerset? Fair enough, if that’s what floats your boat. Whatever you opt for, you’ll come away impressed. It’s just that kind of pub. And that’s before I even start on the fruit beers…

The Ship & Mitre is a smashing little pub — and one I’ve just spent a very happy(and mildly drunken) evening in. A CAMRA favourite(it was voted as the Pub of the Year 2009 for Liverpool by the local CAMRA real ale campaign group), it stocks an extensive selection of incredibly tasty beers(with an emphasis on offerings from micro-breweries), showcasing everything from artisan Belgian lagers to lipsmackingly fruity beery offerings. If that wasn’t enough, it also stocks a wide range of delicious sipping whiskeys — most of which you can purchase a large measure of for the low low price of four quid. I’ve yet to try the food, but from what I could see of what was being served up, it looked to be substantial, fresh and decidedly tasty. One of my favourite things about the Ship & Mitre is its atmosphere — it had a real buzz about it when I was in there, always the sign of a good drinking establishment! I’d love to go back to sample some of its quiz nights, or to go to one of its noted beer and cider tasting events. But whatever reason I find to go back there, I will definitely be returning soon — if only because there’s a bottle of Leffe Blonde there with my name on it.

What a fantastic pub! Dozens of beers and many dark for the winter festival. Great home-cooked food. A mind-boggling selection — go all the way round the bar before ordering in case you get a barmaid with no real ale knowledge. Can’t recommend highly enough.

The Ship & Mitre has gone through a number of ups and downs over the years, but has just been voted as the Pub of the Year 2009 for Liverpool by the local CAMRA real ale campaign group. That’s because of the range of real ales — 12 are normally on — with an emphasis on including offerings from micro-breweries. They also do a wide range of high-end continental lagers, and other bottled beers, such as kriek. All this is complemented by regular real ale festivals, and events for cider, German and belgian beers, in addition to regular quiz nights. The pub itself has an impressive ‘cinema-style’ art deco exterior — it was built in 1935 by the then Bent’s brewery — although much of the art deco decoration inside was removed in the 1970s. The bar has lots of wood, with different seating areas and a raised carpeted area at the back, all around a large central servery. So, why only 3 stars for all this real ale interest? Well, it’s because I think it’s a victim of its own success. On my last visit(admittedly on a Saturday), it was so crammed full we could barely get in. It was a real scrum and we took ages to navigate the central island bar to find our friends. There were queues for the bar and — a first for me — a queue for the gent’s toilets, which, with such a high level of usage, were none too pleasant. The beer was decent, but I find it hard to enjoy when standing up, being jostled by punters pushing past and having to shout at my neighbour to be heard. I’m not too sure what the answer is, unless it is to use the upstairs function spaces on a regular basis to provide more room. Alternatively, it’s probably worth visiting in the week when it’s quieter

The Ship and Mitre is the first choice in Liverpool when it comes to cask ales and imported beers. it does come accross as being dingy and full of students. however i think this adds to the character of the place. the beers on the board change as regularly as the barrels and there’s plenty of international bottled brew for you to try. The many beers on offer include some fruit flavoured ones, like rasberry or cherry, which although being a bit on the pricey side, are very yum. with this pub, you can never be sure if your drink will arrive in a normal, generic pint glass, or if it will come in a glass as full of character as the pub itself. its great for a decent pint away from the bright shinyness of generic pub chains

This pub seems to have improved since Jim’s review. The ales are decent and well-kept, there are signs of the lager-lovers types, but not to excess and the staff were quite competent. Most of the lagers served are, to be fair, high-end, specialist lagers, as opposed to the bog standard, get-pissed-quickly type. The real highspot, however, is the addition of The Burning Kitchen — an excellent eating spot for adventurous drinkers! They have been mentioned in a number of Liverpool publications(which is why I tried it out) mainly due to their serving the best burgers in the area, possibly in the Norwest. The real pulling point are the wild boar and bison burgers; I’m not a burger lover — going hungry rather than going into Maccy’or BK’s with groups I work with — but these are something else!
