I must be honest, I tend not to eat at St John’s Precinct, mainly because I don’t eat fast food and these seats are generally reserved for St John’s patrons, thus I take my healthy pack up elsewere. However, generally the food court is not appealing, it’s very dull, a little uncomfortable and, while cleaners are on hand, it’s often a little scruffy. Moreover, it’s always packed, but surely this is a good sign? It’s clearly popular and with all sorts of people: mums and kids, groups of lads, old couples, singles, everybody. There are a lot of «restaurants» to choose from which may appeal and it’s convenient before, during or after shopping in the precinct. The food court’s a great idea and quite necessary I think in a large shopping centre, however in comparison to other malls: the Trafford Centre in Manchester, Meadowhall in Sheffield, St John’s is rather dowdy and tired.

The food court in St. Johns market has a bright red sign hanging above it which gives a tacky impression which pretty much sums up the general feel of the place. I am not a big fan of this shopping centre as a whole and this food area has done nothing to improve my opinion. The place just looks dated and even restaurants such as Mc Donalds look like something out of back to the future which cannot be a good thing. The service here is nearly always very slow and the staff seem to not care a jot about the customers feelings and this is of course very poor form. The food itself is of average quality but the atmosphere and service mean that you should visit somewhere else. I have very little positive things to say about this food court and basically I would suggest that you head elsewhere.

I always try and restrict the amount of time I spend in St Johns shopping centre to the minimum, so why anyone would want to sit and eat lunch in there is beyond me. The food court is in the centre of the crowded shopping centre sandwiched between the various bargain shops. The dim light provided by the fluorescent lighting does nothing to improve the atmosphere and i would suggest you avoid here at all costs.

I don’t agree with the previous review as not all food courts appear as grotty as they might look. It depends what your own standards are and how you perceive such an atmosphere. It is fair to say that St. John’s food court isn’t the best I’ve saw but having said that, it doesn’t necessarily have to, as long as it does a good job of providing a good food service. There are an array of different restaurants on offer; many of these are common fast-food chains so nothing unique about them(KFC, McDonald’s and Subway for example). In fact, they could do with a few more Oriental or Mexican restaurants but this is only a small food court. However, there is plenty of seating with staff that noticeably work hard to maintain the cleanliness of tables. If you’re looking for somewhere for a quick eat and don’t care about the atmosphere, you have an adequate choice here.
