Ah yes good old English pub, with a good old random name. Far from just being a drinking hole, this place serves some decent grub also. If you got beef with beef then this might not be the joint for ya’all. They love their cows here and they cook’em good. You can tell these people love chargrilling, that’s a good sign that as I know most foodies love chargrilled cooking. Their beef is chosen carefully and apparently taken from traditionally reared cattle fed predominantly on grass to ensure exceptional flavour and tenderness. That makes perfect sense and is good to know is it not… The steaks really are delicious and the secret is in their preparation. You have to put passion into preparing the food and that translates into the flavour. Here they use a family run firm of butchers the meat is matured for a minimum of 28 days before being seared on the chargrill for that finger licking taste. The menu also includes all other regular meats, chicken et al. I’m big fan of pub grub and at 2 courses for under a tenner why not… Stag and Rainbow thus is right up my street, even if it ain’t up yours give it a drag.

This pub does some of the best steak outside of the city centre. Unfortunately, I’ve only been here twice, and one of those times I had just had my tongue pierced, so had to settle for soup. It’s a Beefeater pub, so they specialise in grills, therefore it’s no surprise that the steak is so good. And if you’ve read any other of my reviews, you’ll know I’m a steak fanatic, so appreciate a well-cooked piece of meat(although I like my steak rare, not well done, just cooked well!) This is a nice venue, despite the fact that it’s right on top of a main road. The service is good and the atmosphere cosy and friendly. I’ve not been here and stood at the bar — I get the impression it’s more of a food first, drink later kind of place, but I could be wrong as I’m not a local of this area. I know that quite a few people are fans though — whilst working abroad last year I was talking to a couple from down south who were excited about the prospect of driving their son up to Liverpool for the start of uni in September. They were particularly excited, though, because they could call in at The Stag once they’d got rid of their son. «Not wasting what I’ve heard is a bloody good bit of meat on the likes of him» I believe was the sentiment.

I always have an enjoyable time when I visit this place. It is a place I always feel comfortable and at ease. The food is superb and have a great selection of wines and a good selection of beers. To me the best time to visit is on weekdays daytime or in the evenings it can get rather busy at weekends.
